Inmates Remanded Over Child Rapist Murder

Two prisoners have appeared in court charged with murder after a convicted child rapist was reportedly found disembowelled in a cell.

Mitchell Harrison was killed on Saturday morning at Frankland prison in County Durham.

Michael Parr, 32, and Nathan Mann, 23 appeared at Peterlee Magistrates' Court where they spoke only to confirm their names.

Harrison, 23, was serving an indeterminate sentence of at least four-and-a-half years after raping a 13-year-old girl in 2009.

He was also put on the sex offenders' register for life after the attack on the teenager at a property in Kendal, Cumbria.

A post-mortem examination found that he had died from "multiple injuries".

Parr and Mann are charged jointly with murder and will face a judge at Newcastle Crown Court on Wednesday.

Frankland is a Category A facility, housing more than 800 inmates, including some of the most serious offenders in the prison system.

Soham killer Ian Huntley suffered serious injuries after having his throat slashed by an inmate at the facility last year.
