Kenya Attack: Briton Held At Nairobi Airport

Kenyan police are questioning a British passport holder stopped at Nairobi's international airport over the mall massacre, Sky News understands.

The man, who was heading for London, has been held since earlier this week after he aroused suspicions at Jomo Kenyatta Airport because he had facial bruising.

Witnesses told how interrogators swooped after the man - wearing dark glasses - rushed to amend the display on his laptop upon arrest.

A Kenyan journalist described him as "jittery" and unable to speak English fluently.

His passport shows he was born in Somalia and Sky News understands he received UK citizenship two years ago.

Although he has a base in east London, he has spent time in his country of birth recently and told Kenyan police he got his bruises from fighting there.

Sky's Special Correspondent Alex Crawford said: "The Kenyans believe he has links with al Shabaab and he has a lot of questions to answer.

"They want to know what he was doing in Somalia and whether he knew the mall attackers."

Crawford said Kenya also wants to know whether he has knowledge of the other 200 Britons who have returned to the UK after time inside Somalia with al Shabaab.

Citizen TV Journalist Mike Njenga said he witnessed the man being arrested at the airport.

He said: "Immediately after they arrested him, he just opened his laptop, keyed in something, and his laptop shut - so that's when they noticed something bigger was going on and they took him away for interrogation."

Speaking to Crawford in Nairobi, Njenga added: "At some point he was wearing some dark glasses, huge dark glasses, perhaps to conceal his eyes and all.

"Then he was a little bit jittery, he didn't speak fluent English ... so they had to bring in somebody."

The British High Commission in Kenya confirmed they were offering the suspect consular assistance but did not believe he was a key player in the mall attack.
