Worker Killed As Footie Stadium Collapses

Part of a football stadium in the Netherlands has collapsed killing one person and injuring over 10 others.

A large section of the roof at the FC Twente football stadium in Enschede came crashing down around midday, according to a police spokesman.

Construction workers were believed to be the only people at the scene at the time, carrying out renovation work during the off season.

The local mayor said one worker has been killed and 10 others taken to hospital.

Peter den Oudsten said a total of 14 people were hurt when the roof at the southern end of the stadium collapsed, trapping them in the wreckage.

Three people were treated at the scene after being pulled from the rubble by emergency workers.

"It is terrible. One person has died and 14 others were injured," said Mr Oudsten.

"Ten of them were taken to hospital, two of those are seriously injured."

The mayor said the cause of the accident is not yet known but reports in the Dutch media say it happened when a crane drove into the structure.

Pictures on local news and social media websites show a large section of the roof crashed onto a bank of red seats behind one of the goals.

The team, Dutch national champion in 2010, was believed to be training elsewhere at the time of the collapse.
