Papal conclave at the Vatican - in pictures

The second day of the papal conclave has begun in the Vatican. A total of 115 cardinals will vote on which man will become leader of the Catholic Church - but as the ballots begin there is no clear frontrunner. Black smoke emerged from the Vatican chimney after the first vote last night. The conclave is famously secretive and it will most likely take a few days for a clear favourite among the cardinals to emerge. Cardinal-electors will need to reach a two-thirds-plus-one vote majority to elect the 266th Pontiff. The longest conclave lasted for 33 months in 1268. Previous Pope Benedict XVI abdicated last month in a surprising move that shocked the Catholic Church.
