Australia heatwave: Bush fire kills one and forces thousands to evacuate

Conditions are worsening in Australia after bush fires claimed one life and tore through western and southern regions of the country. An extreme heatwave has gripped the south, west and east, with temperatures soaring to 45 degrees Celsius. Some residents in Victoria, where 80 fires were burning, have been asked to evacuate their homes for their own safety. Conditions on the tennis courts during the Australian Open in Melbourne were so extreme earlier in the week a player and ball boy collapsed. In Tasmania there are reports of road tar melting in the heat. Conditions in Victoria, south Australia, are the worst since 2009, when wildfires killed 173 people and destroyed more than 2,000 homes.
