Police Uncover Gun Hoard On Scottish Farm

A cache of guns and ammunition, allegedly including semi automatic weapons, has been found in farm buildings north of Glasgow.

It has been reported the arms cache includes an SA80 assault rifle, as used by the army, two AK-47 rifles, a couple of hand guns and a shotgun.

Strathclyde Police described the find as significant but refused to confirm what types of weapons were found or how many.

They were found at the former farm in Killermont, Bearsden on the outskirts of Glasgow, after a member of the public alerted the police on Thursday evening.

More than 20 officers, including forensic teams, have been searching the building and nearby woodland.

Several packages wrapped in plastic were removed by forensic officers and are being tested at a local police station.

In an interview at the farm, Detective Superintendent Jim Downie of Strathclyde Police told Sky News: "While I am unable to confirm the types of firearms found, what I can say is this was a significant find.

"This is a very quiet residential area and people are understandably alarmed by what has been found here.

"But what I would like to say to those people is thankfully the weapons are now off the streets and are in the safe hands of Strathclyde Police."

"This investigation is at a very early stage so I cannot say any more but I would appeal to anyone with any information as to who might have have had these weapons or how they were hidden here to come forward immediately."

It has been reported that the property used to be a working farm but is now rented out by a group of men in their 30s and 40s. It is believed to be used as a recording studio.

A man, who claims to live at the property and who asked not to be named, said he called police when he found the weapons in a bag inside a bin at the side of the building.

"I didn't know exactly how many weapons there were until the police emptied the bag," he said. "There was an SA80 army rifle, two AK-47 rifles, two handguns and a shotgun as well as around 10 to 15 magazines of ammunition."

He added: "Obviously I was concerned to find something like this on the property but the police have been helpful."

Strathclyde Police said no one has yet been arrested or charged in connection with the cache.
