Prince Harry And Charity Team Reach South Pole

Prince Harry and his teams of injured service personnel have reached the South Pole.

The teams from Britain, the US and Commonwealth completed the 210-mile trek for the Walking With The Wounded charity at midday, days ahead of schedule

In temperatures of below -35C, the fourth-in-line to the throne's feat makes him the first member of the Royal Family to reach the geographical South Pole.

Harry said: "We’re here - I am about 10 metres away from the Pole. It’s an amazing feeling, it really is.

"I think we’ll be having a few whiskies tonight and then everyone’s looking forward to getting home. Mission success."

A spokesman for Walking With The Wounded told Sky News everyone was "proud and relieved" to have achieved their goal.

On Twitter, explorer and TV presenter Ben Fogle, who is also a friend of Harry's brother William, said "congratulations to Prince Harry and all the @supportthewalk soldiers who have arrived at the South Pole."

The race element of the South Pole Allied Challenge was removed last week after some team members struggled with altitude sickness and precarious terrain.

The decision to remove the competitive nature of the trek quickly improved morale, enabling the three teams to cross the finish line together in 12 days, well ahead of the predicted 16-day schedule.
