Rangers Docked 10 Points Over Administration

Glasgow Rangers football club has gone into administration and been docked 10 points.

Rangers has appointed the administrators Duff & Phelps, the Court of Session in Edinburgh heard.

In a statement, Rangers chairman Craig Whyte said: "The club did not want nor anticipate having to take this course of action today but had no option.

"We had hoped that continued dialogue with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) would mean that a decision on administration would not have to be taken for 10 days while all other avenues were explored."

He added: "It remains our firm belief that the club's future can be secured and we hope this period of administration will be as short as possible."

Fans said they were "shocked" by the news and described it as one of the club's "darkest days".

Strathyclyde Police immediately released a statement confirming it would not police games unless its costs were guaranteed, although following a "positive" meeting with the club's administrators, they said they would plan for this weekend's game against Kilmarnock as normal.

On Monday, the Glasgow club lodged papers at the court signalling its intention to enter administration and said a final decision would be taken in 10 days.

But the decision was speeded up after the club was given a 3.30pm deadline by a judge at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

HMRC had asked the court to appoint an administrator, rather than let Rangers make the choice.

Sky News understands the HMRC court move was prompted by £9m in witheld PAYE and VAT payments.

The Clydesdale Bank Premier League champions are also awaiting the verdict of a tax tribunal which could cost them £75m.

The Ibrox side, one of the biggest and most influential clubs in Scotland, has now fallen 14 points behind leaders Celtic as a result of the decision, but remain second, still nine points ahead of third-placed Motherwell.

Holyrood sport minister Shona Robison said: "This is obviously a concerning situation for everyone involved in Scottish football.

"Football is our national game and it is now for the administrators to take forward the process of assessing the business and securing an outcome in the best interests of the club, its staff, supporters and the game of football as a whole in Scotland."

It is very interesting to note that Rangers have appointed their own administrators Duff and Phelps. When Craig Whyte took over the club Duff and Phelps gave advice on the takeover and are discribed as reconstruction specialists. Their appointment as administrators may lead some to speculate or conclude that it was always planned to place this club in administration to avoid tax liabilities. It iwas reported on TV tonight that the new owner has also ran up a further £9M (approx) out-standing tax since taking over! It is such a pity that the fans who have payed their hard earned cash supporting their team did not know that every kick of the ball, every point won was a waste of their time and money assuming that administration was always on the cards from day one, that is.

Also worth noting David that Duff and Phelps under a previous guise were part owned by a company that was at the time owned by...Craig Whtye!

This can only be seen by all true football suporters as a good start . The inland revenue should now look into the finances of every premier club on both sides of the border. For to long clubs have been running up massive losses whilst paying exhorbitant wages and transfer fees, and what do the fans get ?, an ever increasing entrance fee and a new team shirt to buy for their kids every season. They cant even find eleven of these over priced prema-donnas to win the world cup.

if they can pay the wages, they can pay ther taxes !!!

I am ot a football fan, but I think lesser known clubs would have been relegated. Rangers have deliberately not paid a tax bill, docking of 10 points as an FA punishment is a joke.
They should be immediately relegated at least one divivsion otherwise this sends out a bad president for all other football clubs. RELEGATE THEM.

I really dont understand why they have had 10 points deducted due to having financial problems, doesnt make any sense.

It happens down south too. Basically they are being punished for being so reckless with their finances. In a way it's unfair for the other clubs having to play against a team that has got an advantage because of reckless financing.

Yeah, I wish we were more like the EPL. For years it's been a two horse race, just imagine what it would be like to have a three horse race, just like the EPL!

The standard of football is pub-league, and will be even more boring and predictable if celtic are there on their own.
      • neil 3 months ago
Pub League? More like Championship/League 1. Unless, of course you're saying that those are pub leagues too.

Racism seem rife in football at all levels..its sickening..close the leagues, stop the bungs, make them all play for enjoyment after a hard weeks work, as it did when the game was born..now it is a monster, a wild, spoilt overpaid ugly racist monster.

Just hope this is all put to bed soon as its dragged on far to long for us fans.

The only option I wont accept is for a new club to rise from the ashes as that to me would be the end of The Rangers FC that I have followed all my life.

I would rather be sent to the bottom of scottish football than lose our history as a new club.

Why do i think this was Whyte's plan all along. Take us down and bring us back as a new club but apply to play in england instead of Scotland and try and work up way up to the EPL

According to the Press 8 EPL teams are also under investigation as of today. This could get very interesting.

This could be the tip of an iceberg,if the taxman were to look at the affairs of a number of clubs and our old friends the bankers were to stop believing the nonsense told them by chairmen of clubs.Doubt my words watch football on tv and you will see a team sponsored by a bank that was bailed out by the taxpayer and is still majority owned by us.

why was luton town deducted 25 points yet a mediocre scottish team only gets 10, anybody else owed 49 million pounds in unpaid taxes they be sent straight to prison they should be relegated to the div 3 scottish league or disbanded altogether,
