World’s longest relationship ends as giant tortoises Bibi and Poldi split up after 115 years

There’s an old saying that true love lasts forever, but then it’s rarely tested as extremely as it has been by a pair of tortoises – who have finally called it quits after 115 years.

An Austrian zoo dropped the bombshell of the fallout between giant tortoises Bibi and Poldi, both 115, after the two became increasingly hostile towards each other.

Despite being inseparable for more than a century, the animals are now feeling the strain and can’t even stand to be living in the same cage they have shared for 36 years at Klagenfurt Zoo.

Before then, they had lived together peacefully at the Basel Zoo in Switzerland.

According to the Austrian Times, Bibi, the female tortoise, has become so sick of her companion that she attacked him, gnawing off a chunk of Poldi’s shell.

Following more altercations between the duo, male Poldi has been moved to another cage.

While giant tortoises have no teeth, they have large and powerful jaws that can cause great pain.

It is reported that not even romantic meals, games, and relationship counseling  provided by the zoo could spark old feelings again.

Klagenfurt’s Zoo director, Helga Happ, told the Austrian Times that she has never seen anything like this before with tortoises.

"We get the feeling they can't stand the sight of each other anymore.

"We have staff talking to and trying to engage the two in interacting, and we hope that they might find their harmony again.

“We were told that it’s very rare that after so many years animals who are a pair will fall apart, but that’s where we are. We hope though we can bring round a reconciliation.”

We hope for both their sake that absence makes the heart grow fonder.
