A Swedish duo have made the most of the wintry weather by building a playground entirely from snow and ice.

The snowy construction features all playground necessities including a three-metre high maze, two slides, seats and benches as well as a giant snow lantern.

Christian Stromqvist and Karl-Johan Ekeroth from PinPin Studio created the elaborate playground for a winter festival in Kiruna, Sweden.

They say it will be open and free for all until April, when it inevitably melts during warmer weather.

Christian explains that the position of the lantern in the playground is actually a fountain in the summer and was placed there to stop people walking over it.

He said: ‘It has a couple of massive lamps inside it, and really lights up when it gets dark.

'During the winter months, when there is polar night, the sun never rises in Kiruna so we wanted to do our own sun.

'It also works as a light source and space divider, and features a few ice benches around it.'

The inspiration and key elements behind the playground is adventure and exploring and has been created to make visitors feel like they are visiting a lost city.
