Over a million people in the UK a missing out on a monthly payout of at least £3,778. People of a certain age are being urged to check if they might be entitled to Attendance Allowance as it could provide a big help towards meeting their monthly costs.

People may qualify for Attendance Allowance if they have reached State Pension age and need any of the following:

  • A long-term physical or mental illness or disability.

  • Help with your personal care (for example, washing and dressing), or supervision to keep you safe, for at least six months before claiming.

Pensioners and their loved ones are being alerted to the availability of this benefit - worth either £3,778 or £5,644 a year, as many people aren't aware of it and don't claim it. MoneySavingExpert.com, the popular website founded by Martin Lewis, says a massive 1.1 million are missing out.

They said: "As it's estimated millions are missing out on what they're entitled to, it's worth checking. Attendance Allowance - 1.1 millions pensioners miss out on at least £3,778 a year.

"This is a non-means-tested benefit giving a fixed payout of either £3,778/year or £5,644/year to cover some of the costs of providing help for those who need it. Who's likely missing out?

"Those who've needed help over six months, day or night, with daily living (such as washing and eating) or supervision (someone to watch you if you're a danger to yourself or others). It's common for those with Parkinson's, dementia, terminal illness, blindness, learning difficulties and more."

Age UK said: "Attendance Allowance is a benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision because of an illness or disability. There are two different weekly rates, and the amount you get depends on how much help you need.

"Any Attendance Allowance you receive doesn't necessarily need to be spent on your care. Many people spend the money on other types of help in the home, or on equipment to help them stay independent.

"For example, it could help you pay bills, get meals delivered or cover the cost of taxis."
