Wine expert and social media sensation, Tom Gilbey recently threw down some thoughts about a popular supermarket red.

Jacobs Creek, one of the best-selling wine labels in Britain is not often held in high esteem by those with a nose for quality vino. However, after a saunter down to Asda, Tom was recommended a bottle of Jacobs Creek Double Barrelled Mature Shiraz to enjoy with his steak.

In his own words, he "asked the dude at the checkout for a red wine with massive nuts". Having snapped up a bottle in store, the TikTok wine connoisseur with over 290,000 followers, shared a good, gulpy review of the £10.50 bottle, recommending it as a good "first red wine".

For anyone new to red wine, understanding the heady world of tannins, appellation, grape varieties and more could be enough to send you straight back to the simplicity of a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Thankfully, Tom is on hand to share his knowledge with the world.

Never one to mince his words, he starts this review by reading the blurb on the label, he said: "Double-barrelled Shiraz? Aged in Scotch Whiskey b"***ks? 14 and a half per cent? Is it headbanger juice."

With an early taste of negativity in his video review, things improve when he starts to pour. The wine expert describes the colour as "dark and deep" adding "exactly what I want a Shiraz to look like, almost black inside."

Taking a sniff into the glass, Tom says "It's ripe, it's blackberry, and it's got that little bit of mint that I get from a really good Australian Shiraz." Finally taking a sizeable slurp he exclaims "It's got lovely creaminess to it, it's quite rich, it's got a bit of residual sugar I think and the tannins are really soft."

He concluded his review by saying "I would actually recommend Jacobs Creek Double-Barrelled Shiraz aged in Scotch Whiskey and all the b****ks that’s printed on the front of the label, at about £10.50 from Asda, as your first red wine."
