10-hour thunderstorm warning remains in place for Stoke-on-Trent
Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire are under threat of thunderstorms today (May 12) — as a 12-hour weather warning remains in place. The yellow weather warning warns of thunderstorms across a broad swathe of the western UK.
The warning, issued by the Met Office, becomes active at 1pm and will remain in force until 11pm tonight. A hot day is predicted for North Staffordshire, with highs of 23°C expected between 3pm and 5pm.
There is a chance of rain from 1pm, with heavy rain expected from 6pm. The Met Office predicts thunder and lightning will arrive around 7pm. Rain could persist into the early hours.
The Met Office warns of travel disruption and possible property flooding brought by heavy rain, adding that spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of power cuts, travel delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
The Met Office warns there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. There is also a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life, particularly in places such as road and railway underpasses.
In a statement, the Met Office said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms could lead to some disruption in places, especially to travel. Isolated property flooding is possible."
