A 10-year-old girl is critically injured after her mother’s boyfriend allegedly shot her in what officials are calling a murder-suicide.

The shooting occurred at an apartment complex in Spring, Texas, around 5 p.m. local time on May 30, according to a media briefing from the Harris County Texas Sheriff's Office.

A 39-year-old male, a 33-year-old female and a 10-year-old girl were involved in the incident, the sheriff’s office said.

The identities of the individuals have not yet been released, but, according to authorities, the adult male was the boyfriend of the adult female, and the child was her daughter, local outlet ABC 13 reported.

All three had sustained gunshot wounds, according to a post from Harris County Texas Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The child was shot in the abdomen, and shortly after mustered the strength to call her grandmother for help, who them called 911, ABC 13 reported.

Upon arrival, officers found the boyfriend deceased and the mother unresponsive, the sheriff’s office said. The mom received medical attention, but died at the scene.

The child was found in critical condition and was airlifted in a Life Flight helicopter to a nearby hospital, footage shared by the Spring Fire Department shows.

She entered surgery immediately. Authorities said she is expected to survive, according to ABC 13.

She is currently in her grandmother’s custody, the outlet added.

The Harris County Texas Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

After a preliminary investigation, the May 30 incident appeared to be the result of a “disturbance” between the adult male and female, Sergeant Greg Pinkins told reporters. He added that the 10-year-old appeared to have been “struck in the crossfire from the shooting.”

“Based on initial info,” Sheriff Gonzalez echoed on X, it “appears to be a murder-suicide attempt.”

Police said the mom’s boyfriend is the current suspect, and only one firearm, which was recovered from the scene, was used.

Authorities also said investigators will look into whether previous incidents have occurred at the apartment unit, where both the mom and boyfriend were on the lease.

No other individuals were injured in the shooting, authorities said.
