10 Oscars red-carpet looks that missed the mark — sorry
The 2024 Academy Awards were held on Sunday, March 10.
The Oscars are Hollywood's biggest night, so stars pull out all the stops.
But not every look is a home run.
The Oscars are Hollywood's biggest night, celebrating the movies of 2023, which took home a collective $9 billion at the US box office, according to Comscore.
So, it's no surprise that each star hopes to look their best by turning out iconic looks.
However, not every look always hits the mark. These are some of the looks we didn't love from this year's ceremony.
Jennifer Lawrence's polka-dot look wasn't glam enough for the Oscars.
Jennifer Lawrence has turned out some of the best Oscars looks of all time, which is why we couldn't help but be disappointed by the plainness of this Dior dress, which was strapless and included a matching shawl. The polka-dot material seemed too casual for Hollywood's biggest night.
Dwayne Johnson's gray satin suit seemed wrinkled by the time he posed for photos.
Johnson was probably hoping for a repeat of his Oscars look from last year: In 2023, he wore a ballet-pink satin suit jacket by Dolce & Gabbana, and publications, including GQ, called him one of the best-dressed men of the night.
Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be, as this year's Dolce & Gabbana suit appeared as if it had wrinkled. The burgundy shirt — or scarf — did little to elevate the look.
Ariana Grande's pink dress with oversized sleeves looked like a sleeping bag.
Grande's custom Giambattista Valli gown was a nod to her character Glinda in the upcoming "Wicked" adaptation.
But the dress' material made it look like she was wearing a sleeping bag on the carpet.
The tightness of the dress on her legs also made it seem like Grande was having some difficulty walking, as seen when she presented the award for best original score.
This color looks amazing on Emily Blunt, but we can't unsee the outline of underwear on the front.
The ivory beading that covered Blunt's Schiaparelli gown was a beautiful choice, complementing the nominee's skin tone.
But we can't get past the silver detailing on the front, which Blunt's stylist Jessica Paster told Vogue she calls "the little underwear."
Fans were also confused by the floating shoulder straps, which made it seem like the dress didn't fit properly.
"Did I know that people were going to talk about the shoulder? Absolutely. Do I care what anybody else has to say? Absolutely not," Paster told the publication.
Matthew McConaughey's brown suit jacket and his wife Camila Alves' black gown with an exposed diamond bra didn't win top marks, either.
It seems like McConaughey and Alves, who have been married for 12 years, didn't coordinate their looks at all.
Alves wore a skin-tight Versace black gown with a gem-encrusted bust, which she accessorized with matching black opera gloves and a classic Bulgari snake necklace.
Her husband, though, went plain with a brown and black tuxedo, also designed by Versace.
Ava Duvernay's dress was a beautiful color, but we can't get past the giant belt-buckle straps.
The baby-blue look was designed by Louis Vuitton.
Andrea Riseborough's tartan dress is channeling a quilt.
Riseborough, who was controversially nominated for her performance in 'To Leslie" last year, returned to the Oscars red carpet this year in a Loewe dress.
Between layers of tulle, elbow-length gloves, and a large flower necklace, there's just too much going on with Erika Alexander's look.
We couldn't be happier that Alexander is finally getting the respect she deserves — however, we can't get behind this busy look designed by Christian Siriano.
The strapless white gown could've been beautiful on its own, but adding the black skirt with purple, pink, and green tulle was too much.
Alexander "wanted to take a risk" and "have fun" with her first Oscars appearance, Siriano said during red-carpet coverage on E!.
"She really felt like the idea of wearing white was elegant and regal," he said.
Elsa Pataky's white gown showed off her abs, but the pattern of the cutouts didn't fully work.
Pataky's white dress showed off her abs, but the cutouts made this dress look like it would've been more suited to the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
The exaggerated silver chain on Molly Sims' dress ruins the otherwise delicate gown.
This beautiful pastel-pink Georges Chakra silk chiffon dress would've been perfect had it not been for the giant silver braided chain around the neckline, which seems incongruous with the delicacy of the look.
