10 things you probably didn't know about 'Barbie' star Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie is known for roles in movies like "Wolf of Wall Street, "Babylon," and "Birds of Prey."
The Oscar-nominated actor stars as the titular character of Greta Gerwig's film "Barbie."
Here are a few fun facts and things you might not have known about the Australian actor.
She was briefly part of an ice-hockey league when she moved from Australia to New York.
Robbie told W magazine in 2017 that she was such a big fan of the "Mighty Ducks" movies that she wanted to play hockey. So, she joined a team when she first moved to America.
During an appearance on NBC's "Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" in October 2017, Robbie explained that she was part of an ice-hockey league for a short amount of time when she wasn't under contract working.
Her adoration for the sport was so strong that she and her friends dressed as the Mighty Ducks for Halloween one year and walked around NY "in a flying V formation."
If Robbie wasn't an actor, she'd be interested in working in pyrotechnics or special effects.
Robbie shared the fun fact with BuzzFeed in 2019, after revealing that her childhood aspirations were to be a hotel owner or a magician.
"I'd need to be on a film set in some capacity," she said. "I'd miss that too much."
Robbie loves "Harry Potter" so much that she once lied to an optometrist about needing glasses to see.
"When it comes to 'Harry Potter,' I'm a massive, massive nerd," she said during an appearance on BBC's "The Graham Norton Show" in 2020.
Robbie went on to explain that when she was a kid, she spent one of her birthdays reading one of the "HP" books, with glasses that she didn't even need.
"I lied to the optometrist because I wanted to have glasses like 'Harry Potter,'" she said.
Coincidentally, her husband, Tom Ackerley, was an extra in the "HP" films growing up.
Robbie previously spoke about the start of her appreciation for the book series in a video for Chanel.
"I was at my mum's friend's house up on a property where there was no TV, nothing to do, but there was this book, Harry Potter,'" she recalled. "I started reading it and I got obviously obsessed."
Robbie told UNILAD in 2022 that she took the official "Harry Potter" sorting quiz and is a Hufflepuff.
Meeting the rapper 50 Cent was the most starstruck she's ever been.
Robbie shared the fun fact while participating in Vogue's "73 Questions" video series in 2019.
The actor met 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, while attending the 2015 Annual Charity Day hosted by Cantor Fitzgerald and BGC in September in New York City.
Robbie and Jackson were among the stars who manned phone lines in support of the charity event.
She had a 24-hour party to celebrate her 24th birthday in 2014.
"It's what I imagine it's like to do a marathon," she said during an appearance on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in June 2016.
Robbie said that the lengthy party took place in London, with her closest friends. The festivities began at 9 a.m. with a champagne breakfast, followed by multiple outfit changes, a trip to Hyde Park, a stop at Five Guys for burgers, and visits to "progressively filthier, and filthier bars."
Robbie and her friends closed out the 24-hour marathon at the same courtyard where the fun began.
Robbie once faked her own death because she despised her babysitter.
During an interview with UNILAD in 2022, Robbie explained that she had a babysitter named Talia whom she "adored." She couldn't work one day, so her mom got a replacement babysitter, an "old lady" who Robbie described as "really grumpy and mean."
"I was so pissed off that we didn't have Talia anymore and in defiance, I was just not gonna listen to anything this old, mean lady babysitter had to say.
Robbie said that the babysitter commanded her to take a bath, so she decided to make her pay.
"I went and took a giant kitchen knife and ketchup and I lay naked on the tiles outside the bathroom, covered myself in ketchup, and put the knife next to me," she said. "I committed. I lay there for 40 minutes on these cold tiles."
"Eventually, she did come and I almost gave her a heart attack," the actor added. "She didn't come back."
Robbie had never heard of infamous figure skater Tonya Harding until she read the script for "I, Tonya."
Robbie earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Harding in Craig Gillespie's 2018 biopic.
The actor was 4 years old and still living in her home country of Australia when Nancy Kerrigan, Harding's figure skating rival, was attacked.
"When I read the script, I thought it was complete fiction and I thought the writer was so quirky and crazy to come up with all this stuff," she told W magazine in 2017. "And then I realized it was all true."
Robbie sleeps with a bunny plushie, named Bunny, that she got when she was born.
"Please, no one psychoanalyze the fact that I'm 30 and I sleep with a bunny rabbit every night," she said on "The Late Late Show With James Corden" in June 2021.
During an appearance on W magazine's podcast "Five Things With Lynn Hirschberg" in 2021, Robbie said that her husband isn't too fond of Bunny.
"He always throws Bunny out of the bed because he obviously thinks it's a tad ridiculous that I still sleep with Bunny," Robbie said. "Maybe he's a little jealous that Bunny always gets priority place in the bed. He thinks I'm asleep and he'll throw Bunny out of the bed and I get so cross with him."
Robbie also told Jimmy Kimmel that the tattered stuffed animal is her "most prized possession" and she only lets her mom stitch up and wash the toy.
She once won a spaghetti-bolognese-eating competition against a friend.
During an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in 2014, Robbie said that she faced off against a friend who was her driver on the Australian soap opera "Neighbours," which she starred on.
Robbie said that they argued about who could eat more, so they settled it with a competition.
"I'm not kidding, it was probably the most physically and mentally difficult thing I've ever done in my life," she said, revealing that by the end, she ate four pounds of spaghetti bolognese.
"I won the pride of all the crew and it was a momentous moment," she added."
She has a crush on Aragorn from the "Lord of the Rings" franchise.
Viggo Mortensen portrayed Aragon in Peter Jackson's "LOTR" film trilogy released between 2001 and 2003. Robbie shared the fun fact during a recent interview with W magazine.
