Over its nine season run, How I Met Your Mother gave us some pretty epic laughs and heartbreaks. From ‘the pineapple incident’ to Ted being dumped by Stella and Lily breaking up with Marshall, the show revelled in iconic moments that will always stick with fans. Ted’s (Josh Radnor) never-ending story of how he met his wife hit some bumps in the road but overall, it was a joy ride that was filled with the some of the sweetest and thoughtful moments from its entire cast of characters. Here are the most memorable moments from nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother.

1. Barney’s proposal to Robin

image

‘The Final Page’ of his iconic playbook saw Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) enact his last ‘play’ - proposing to Robin (Cobie Smulders). It was a brilliantly thought out plan, which saw Barney popping the question at Robin’s favourite spot in the city, under the beautiful snow. She said yes!

2. The Slap Bet

image

The Slap Bet was a competition between Barney and Marshall (Jason Segel), which saw Marshall being granted eight slaps to dish out to Barney whenever he pleased. First introduced in season two after Marshall wins a bet against Barney, the slap bet was a hilarious sub-story line that cropped up at even the tense situations.

3. Intervention

Holding interventions became a thing when one of the guys in the group started to do something annoying. There were the funny interventions, like when Lily (Alyson Hannigan) couldn’t stop using a fake British accent or when Barney kept doing dangerous magic, but it was the serious interventions that showed us how much this closely-knit group of people care about each other.

4. Robin Sparkles

Barney ends up discovering Robin’s secret past - she was a huge teen pop star back in Canada. With hits like ‘Lets Go To The Mall’ and ‘Sandcastles In The Sand’ Robin was as big as they could get. She even starred in her on TV show before the fame got to her head, and led to her downfall in the music industry.

5. La Vie En Rose

During season nine ‘The Mother’ (Cristin Milioti) sings a beautiful rendition of La Vie En Rose. Her hotel room happens to be next to Ted and he overhears, later explaining that her rendition was his favourite song and that was the very first time he heard it.

6. Marshall’s dad

During season six, Marshall received the heartbreaking news that his father passed away. His reaction after hearing the news is the most sincere, touching moment from his character, and that’s hugely thanks to Jason Segel.

7. The Blue French Horn

On their very first date in the pilot episode, Ted steals a blue French horn for Robin. The romantic gesture was cherished by Robin, who kept the horn on her mantle piece in her apartment, which can be seen in later episodes. The symbolism of the horn makes a return in the series finale when Ted asks Robin out again.

8. Nothing Suits Me Like A Suit

Neil Patrick Harris showed off his incredible singing skills in the show’s 100th episode. When a girl asks Barney to choose between her and his suits, he can’t decide. He ends up bursting out into song and dance in his head to help him choose. In the end, the suits win.

9. The Fiero

Remembering a more simpler time, Marshall has a hard time letting go of his classic Fiero when his car stops working. Ted and Marshall reminisce the good ‘ol times they had together in college. The car makes appearances throughout the show before it’s sent to the scrapyard.

10. When Ted meets the mother.

This moment finally happened in season nine, when both Ted and ‘The Mother’, who introduces herself as Tracy McConnell, end up at the train station to head back to the city after Barney and Robin’s wedding. It’s raining heavy so she offers him her umbrella (the yellow one!) and the rest is history.
