14 'hidden' beer gardens and roof terraces in Newcastle as temperatures set to soar

We really don't want to be tempting fate here, but the sun has DEFINITELY got his hat on this weekend and, if the forecast is to be believed, he's going to keep it on for a while. So with that in mind, we've dusted off our list of the best 'hidden' beer gardens in the city and added a few new ones.

After much of last summer was a washout, with downpours ands heavy winds ruining events like LooseFest, Newcastle Pride and South Tyneside Festival and a few months of dire conditions so far this year, it finally looks like summer might be arriving and right on cue too, as The Hoppings is in town and England are in the Euros (we'll try to forget the Denmark game already!)

For anyone who is in the vicinity of Newcastle this weekend and fancies soaking up some rays while having a few bevs, the good news is that there are plenty of places open for you to do just that and some of them are hidden away from view.

We've picked out 14 of the best 'hidden' beer gardens and terraces to enjoy as we keep everything crossed that talk of a heatwave ends up being true!

1. Altitude

We'll start with one that is re-opening this weekend, after making its debut last year.

The luxe bar right on the top of the NX (former Academy) building, which can only be accessed via a 'hidden' doorway on Clayton Street, is re-launching for 2024 on Friday, June 21 and will be serving up a variety of bespoke cocktail concoctions on its terrace as revellers enjoy panoramic views of the city.

2. The Stand

The Stand on High Bridge isn't a place to go just for some some top notch comedy. It also boasts a very underrated beer garden. So whether you want to sink a few jars before heading to a comedy show or fancy having some drinks before getting some food in The Stand's bistro, get your sunglasses on!

3. Bar 52

Formerly ski themed bar Antler, the space on 55 Degrees roundabout once occupied by the likes of Bar 55 and Linekers is now a sports bar and grill.

And they also have a big outdoor space which has already been packed out this year, particularly whenever Newcastle or England have been playing.

4. Alvino's

Just across the road from Bar 52 is one of Newcastle's most highly regarded cocktail haunts. And as well as a VERY interesting and very eclectic range of tipples to suit all tastes, it's roof is a perfect place to sip on them al fresco style.

5. The Bridge Hotel

You might not think it's the kind of place to have a beer garden, but don't be deceived by one of Newcastle's oldest watering holes nestled right by the High Level Bridge.

If you step out back there are benches and seats to take a load off . while you enjoy a few pints in the sunshine.

6. Revolucion de Cuba

One of the best places in Newcastle for a sunny drink and some of the best cocktails around, take the lift up to the top floor as soon as you enter the Cloth Market bar and you won't regret it!

7. The Botanist

One of THE best sun traps in the city, The Botanist itself is rather hidden, with access via a door just along from Banyan, but i8t's beer garden is one of the best secrets in town, complete with its own bar and live sets from DJs.

8. The Tipsy Cow

A short distance away right next to the Geordie Stottie cafe on Blandford Street (behind Lane 7) is the Tipsy Cow, which quickly amassed plenty of regulars following its opening in 2020.

AS well as having a makeover to become a Tequila Rose terrace last yeas, it has also hosted outdoor performances from stars like dance diva Angie Brown, with a host of others lined up for the coming months.

9. The Forth

Another place that, while regularly frequented by many, isn't best known for its outdoor area.

But it's a perfect spot to catch up with friends while the sun shines bright in the Geordie sky.

10. Bar Luga

One of Grey Street's most famous haunts has a roof terrace that offers a great vantage point to catch some rays.

11. Aveika

While there is much to enjoy from Aveika's food menu indoors and plenty of dancing to be done when the sun goes down, the terrace at the back of the Quayside venue, complete with comfy coaches and its own bar is the ideal setting to enjoy some sun drenched food and cocktails.

12. Frate

Frate opened its doors last summer and has been a popular haunt, come rain or shine, even installing a retractable rood to make sure downpours don't stop the party.

It's tucked away just off Grey Street, right behind Market Shaker and near the back entrance to The Old George.

13. The Old George

Speaking of which, the famous Cloth Market boozer, regarded by many as one of the best pubs in town, has a party in it6s beer garden every single street. So, while it stays rather hidden under an arch, you'll definitely be able to hear it from the street!

14. Horticulture

The bar and restaurant itself is rather hidden away on Market Lane and one of its own hidden gems is its heated terrace.
