The State of the Race

Don’t let last year’s Emmys, where “The White Lotus” star had it in the bag as much as any nominee possibly could, cloud one’s judgment of the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie race. This is often one of the most unpredictable acting categories year-to-year.

Even with the nominations themselves, there was a bit of expectation that “Tiny Beautiful Things” star Merritt Wever could make it in, even if her show was unlikely to get an Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series nomination, because she has won two Emmys before (one of which was in this category for Netflix’s “Godless.”) But Juliette Lewis and Annaleigh Ashford both making the cut for “Welcome to Chippendales,” a show that premiered last November, and received almost no recognition during winter TV awards, was a big surprise.

The one constant through this race has been Niecy Nash-Betts as a frontrunner for her work on the huge hit Netflix series “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” with Emmy winner Claire Danes trailing close behind for her climactic work in “Fleishman Is in Trouble” on FX. This year makes Nash-Betts a five-time nominee, so she has been on voters’ radar for a while, and what better time than now to finally award her for playing the most thoughtful part in one of the most widely watched shows of the TV season.

“Beef” star Maria Bello and “Daisy Jones and the Six” star Camila Morrone are the newcomers, with their shows having been spring releases, but both are representing for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series nominees. The latter likely has the edge though, and could even win, as the musical Prime Video series arguably has the broadest appeal, and the young actress delivers a star-making performance as Camila Dunne, a difficult role to take on given the source material’s fervent following.

Power Rankings:

  1. Niecy Nash-Betts, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (Netflix)

  2. Camila Morrone, “Daisy Jones and the Six” (Prime Video)

  3. Claire Danes, “Fleishman Is in Trouble” (FX)

  4. Maria Bello, “Beef” (Netflix)
