2024 Battle of the Books is a success

Apr. 30—GREENSBURG — Elementary and junior high students from all parts of Decatur County recently gathered at the Greensburg Decatur County Public Library to compete in the 2024 "Battle of the Books," a program the library has hosted since 2011.

The winners in the junior high competition were Greensburg Junior High (1st place) and St. Mary's School (2nd place). The winners for the elementary competition were St. Mary's School (1st place) and Greensburg Elementary School (2nd place).

Battle of the Books is essentially a competition between teams.

In late winter, the library selects 10 books for teams to read throughout the duration of the program. Elementary students have a group of 10 books to read prior to the competition, while the junior high kids have 10 of their own.

The teams decide among themselves whether everyone will read all 10 books or whether they will be divvied up. Much like a school study group, they assign responsibilities and cheer each other on.

The teams are then pitted against each other in a live, point-based competition in which they are questioned on the books they have read.

They take the event seriously, but they also have a lot of fun.

"All the teams performed well and should be proud of their efforts," Greensburg GCPL Marketing Hannah Hassler said.

All students competing received certificates of recognition for their efforts.
