  • The Rivian R1S and R1T are refreshed for 2025, adding a new 850-hp Tri Motor model and improved batteries, including a new lithium-iron-phosphate Standard pack.

  • All electric motors are now built in-house by Rivian, with the revised Quad Motor model now making 1025 horsepower and 1103 pound-feet of torque.

  • The new second-gen R1S and R1T also receive tweaked chassis, updated lighting elements, and enhanced driver assists—base prices are also lower in most cases.

Rivian has rolled out the second generation of the R1S mid-size SUV and R1T pickup truck. While both have blink-and-you'll-miss-them visual changes, there are many notable differences beneath their skins, namely improved batteries and new powertrains.

Battery Updates

Let's get right into it. Both R1 models still offer three battery options: Standard, Large, and Max. The latter two packs have been reengineered with a die-cast carriers, which Rivian says reduce mass and manufacturing costs. The 92.2-kWh Standard battery also now uses a lithium-iron-phospate (LFP) chemistry that's the same as Rivian's electric commercial delivery vans. While the Standard battery's estimated range remains 270 miles, the change is claimed to reduce complexity and make it easier to service.

The Large battery's usable capacity drops from 128.9 to 109.4 kWh. It now provides up to 330 miles of estimated range, down from the previous 352-mile max. Meanwhile, the 141.5-kWh Max pack is said to be marginally larger. On the Dual Motor models, it's expected to provide the R1S with up to 410 miles of range and the R1T with up to 420 miles; both of those estimates are 10 miles more than before. Also, the peak charging rate remains 220 kilowatts for all but the Standard battery, which is capped at 200 kW. Regardless of the configuration, Rivian claims every R1S and R1T can add 140 miles of range in 20 minutes using a DC fast-charger.

Powertrain Improvements

The default Dual Motor powertrain still makes 533 horsepower and 610 pound-feet of torque. The Performance version of that setup continues to produce 665 horses and 810 pound-feet. However, there's a new Tri Motor option—it pairs a single front motor with a pair of rear-mounted units—that generates a combined 850 horses and 1103 pound-feet, exceeding the previous Quad Motor's peak output of 835 horses and 908 pound-feet. The new four-motor models are even mightier, now summoning a seismic 1025 horsepower and 1198 pound-feet of twist.

Rivian claims the 1025-hp R1S can zip to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds; the 850-hp version is expected to do the deed in 2.9 seconds. The Quad also has a higher top speed of 130 mph thanks to a new set of staggered Michelin Pilot Sport S5 tires. Of course, we'll need to conduct our own tests to verify those claims. What's notable about the new Tri Motor and revised Quad Motor configurations is that the electric motors are now built by Rivian in-house, whereas before the Quad's were built by Bosch. The twin-motor setup was already done in-house.

Chassis Tweaks and New Tech

For 2025, Rivian says it reworked the suspensions for both R1 models in an attempt to improve their ride-and-handling traits. You can read our first driving impressions of the R1T here and the R1S here to see what we think about the changes. The latter also includes new Pirelli tires that Rivian says help improve range as well as cool-looking 22-inch aero wheels that have a removable face and give off a vibe similar to the R3X concept.

The R1S and R1T have new lighting elements front and back, including animated light bars and an Adaptive Drive Beam feature that bends light away from oncoming traffic (this will be available later though an over-the-air-software update). Rivian also redid the entire electrical architecture, reducing the number of electronic control units from 17 to seven.

Pricing

With the new Standard LFP battery, the 2025 Rivian R1S Dual Motor starts at $77,700 ($1000 more than before). The Large battery pushes that price to $84,700, and the Max pack starts at $91,700. Those are both cheaper than their 2024 predecessors, when the Dual Motor and Large pack starting at $85,800, and the Max version starting at $95,800. Then there's the new Max Pack Tri-Motor model that starts at $107,700. Rivian hasn't yet released pricing for the R1S Quad Motor.

The 2025 Rivian R1T with dual motors and the standard-size battery starts at $71,700 (same as before). The Large and Max pack versions now start at $78,700 and $85,700, respectively. Compare that with their counterparts from last year: $80,800 for the Dual Motor Large pack and $90,800 for the Max version. The new R1T Tri Motor with the biggest battery starts at $101,700, but we don't yet know how much the Quad Motor will cost.

The R1S Dual Motor is now on sale, and the R1T version is on its way. The Tri Motor variants are coming this summer, with the Quad Motors arriving sometime after that.
