The 3 Best (and 3 Worst) Shows of 2022, So Far

Believe it or not, we’re already more than halfway through 2022. While the year had its fair share of disappointments, it also introduced loads of new streaming content.

On this week’s episode of PureWow’s Stream On podcast, co-hosts Phil Mutz and Rachel Gulmi revisited the most memorable content that’s aired this year, from Severance to Bridgerton. Together, they compiled a list of the three best and three worst shows of 2022 (so far). Keep scrolling and listen to the full podcast episode for details.

The worst shows of 2022:

1. 'The Staircase'

Who’s in it? Toni Collette, Colin Firth, Sophie Turner

How can I watch? HBO Max

If you’ve already seen the Netflix documentary, then consider it a pass. “What was this adding? Other than you get some Toni Collette, who’s amazing. Why is this being retold again?” Mutz said. “It didn’t feel like I was getting new information beyond that documentary.”

2. 'The Terminal List'

Who’s in it? Chris Pratt, Taylor Kitsch, Constance Wu

How can I watch? Prime Video

Despite the star-studded cast, The Terminal List felt insensitive and unnecessary. “It really does feel like a show that [didn’t] need to be made and maybe something that’s a little upsetting to some people,” Mutz said. “Like, why are we promoting this lone wolf crap?”

3. 'Is It Cake?'

Who’s in it? Mikey Day

How can I watch? Netflix

You know, the reality show where contestants try to fool the judges by baking masterpieces that look like common items. “I just can’t get on board,” Mutz explained. “It’s really bad. It’s not good TV. We can do better, Netflix.”

The best shows of 2022:

1. 'Severance'

Who’s in it? Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Patricia Arquette

How can I watch? Apple TV+

Gulmi made a bold statement about Severance, saying, “Honestly, I don’t even think it’s one of the best shows of this year, it’s one of the best shows I’ve seen in the last few years. It is so good.” Mutz added, “That is the one show that I am just dying for season 2 to get here as soon as possible.”

2. 'Heartstopper'

Who’s in it? Kit Connor, Joe Locke, Yasmin Finney

How can I watch? Netflix

“If this show doesn't make it onto everyone’s ‘best of the year’ list…” Gulmi began. And then added, “I have to make a confession: Since Heartstopper came out, I have ditched my daily watch of The Office, and I swapped it for Heartstopper. Anytime it ends, I go back to the beginning because it’s so freaking cute. I have to re-watch it.”

3. 'Abbott Elementary'

Who’s in it? Quinta Brunson, Janelle James, Tyler James Williams

How can I watch? ABC or Hulu

According to Mutz, the show is reminiscent of The Office. “If you love The Office like we do, it’s got that same style of mockumentary. I love everything about it,” he said. “It feels clever and fresh, even though it's set in an elementary school in Philadelphia.”
