Three Sussex schools and a teacher nominated for 'Oscars of education'

Three Sussex schools and a teacher have been nominated for an awards ceremony dubbed the 'Oscars of education'.

The Tes (Times Educational Supplement) Schools Awards 2024 brings independent and state schools together to "celebrate excellence across the whole education sector".

Award categories up for grabs include 'Boarding School of the Year', Inclusive School of the Year and 'Teaching Assistant of the Year' among others.

The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at the Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane on Friday, June 21.

Which Sussex schools were nominated?

Sussex saw two nominees in the 'Boarding School of the Year' category with the Cottesmore School in Pease Pottage and the Handcross Park School in Handcross included.

Cottesmore School describes itself as an "award-winning country boarding prep school for boys and girls".

Its website adds: "Cottesmore has been preparing children for major public schools since 1894 and continues to provide excellent preparation for senior boarding schools who share Cottesmore's belief in nurturing a rounded, dynamic individual."

Meanwhile, Handcross Park School describes itself as a "popular co-educational, day and boarding Prep School for around 400 pupils aged 2 to 13".

Its website adds: "We challenge, inspire and energise our pupils and prepare them for a future that can’t even be imagined today."

Alongside those nominees, Bede's Senior School in Upper Dicker was shortlisted for 'Excellence in Creative Arts'.

Bede's Senior School is a co-educational establishment located across two sites, offering learning "from the age of 3 months through to 18 years old".

It is a "colourful and busy place" where every girl and boy is "encouraged to aspire to be the best they can be," its website shares.

Finally, Jayne Meadows from Brighton Girls GDST was nominated for 'Primary Curriculum Leader of the Year'.

Jon Severs, editor of Tes Magazine said: "Congratulations to all the shortlisted entries - the standard was so high this year despite the challenges schools face.

"It is critical we celebrate excellence and share it widely so we can ensure that the fantastic work happening in education is properly recognised."
