4 Family Members — Including 1-Year-Old and 6-Month-Old — Die After Car Crashes into San Francisco Bus Stop

The victims were identified as Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, Matilde Ramos Pinto and their two sons

Four family members, including a toddler and an infant, were killed when a car crashed into a San Francisco bus stop on Saturday.

The San Francisco Police Department says two people were pronounced dead at the scene, while another three were taken to a hospital after a car collided into a bus stop on Ulloa Street and Lenox Way. A woman died from her injuries in the hospital and police confirmed that an infant succumbed Wednesday.

KTVU reported that the infant was the 6-month old son of Diego Cardoso de Oliveria, 40, a Brazilian citizen, and Matilde Ramos Pinto, 38, who were killed in the crash, along with their 1-year-old son, Joaquin, whose identities were also reported by KRON and the San Francisco Chronicle, among other outlets.

The driver of the car was arrested after the crash, booked on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter, felony reckless driving causing bodily injury and additional traffic violations, the department says. She was released from custody, according to KTVU and KRON, and has not been formally charged. The driver was also hospitalized as a result of the crash.

“This incident was a heartbreaking tragedy,” police say in a release. “The San Francisco Police Department offers its deepest condolences to the victims, their families and loved ones, and everyone at the scene who witnessed and assisted first responders.”

KTVU also reported that the Brazilian consulate in San Francisco released a statement in the wake of the deaths.

"We are deeply saddened to address the recent tragedy that occurred last weekend. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this devastating event,” the statement says, according to the outlet. “In the meantime, we ask for your understanding and respect for the privacy of the individuals and families impacted by this tragedy. Our thoughts remain with them during this difficult time.”
