4 players Jose Mourinho could sign for Liverpool if he gets Anfield job

Jose Mourinho might be eyeing a reunion with some of his old charges at Liverpool, as rumours swirl about him potentially taking the helm at Anfield.

While Feyenoord's Arne Slot is tipped to succeed Jurgen Klopp, with a verbal agreement reportedly in place, Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler isn't sold on the idea. Fowler has suggested that the Merseyside club could do well under the stewardship of a seasoned campaigner like Mourinho, remarking: "I could understand why you would get someone like Mourinho. A case in point would be Real Madrid, for example."

He elaborated on his point by referencing Real Madrid's managerial choice after Zinedine Zidane's departure, adding: "When Zinedine Zidane left for the second time in 2021, they didn't go looking for a young and up-coming manager, they went for an experienced manager in Carlo Ancelotti. That experience and that know-how can definitely help a club in transition."

Speculation is rife over who Mourinho might bring aboard if he takes Fowler's advice and heads to Liverpool.

Fikayo Tomori

The AC Milan centre-back who rose through the ranks at Chelsea during Mourinho's tenure there. With Liverpool expected to bolster their defence come June, Tomori could be an astute acquisition should Mourinho arrive. Tomori, while unlikely to be a first choice over Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, could provide Liverpool with additional depth in defence. A move to Anfield might also enhance his chances of future England squad selections if he performs well in the Premier League.

Evan Ndicka

Roma's French stopper is another potential recruit for Liverpool, should Mourinho make an unexpected switch to Anfield. Last summer, the Merseyside giants were linked with a free transfer for Ndicka, but he ended up at Roma where he had been a regular under Mourinho. At 24, Ndicka still has plenty of potential and could provide relief for Jarell Quansah by serving as another competent back-up at Liverpool. Despite recently collapsing during a match against Udinese, Roma have given him the all-clear to return to football, with cardiological tests revealing no issues.

Nicolo Zaniolo

Liverpool have frequently been associated with Nicolo Zaniolo, although they've never come close to securing his services. He moved to Aston Villa on loan from Galatasaray last summer but has found playing time limited and is expected to return to Turkey when the season concludes. Zaniolo still has ample time to reach his full potential, and Liverpool could provide the perfect setting for him to do so, especially if Mourinho comes on board. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Galatasaray are willing to let him go for a mere £17million, making him a low-risk choice for the Reds as they look to replace Thiago Alcantara this summer.

Tammy Abraham

The former Chelsea man shone at Roma under Mourinho before suffering a severe knee injury towards the end of last season. He returned to the pitch last month, scoring his first goal of the season against Napoli in Roma's latest league match. Liverpool are not exactly lacking in attacking options, with players like Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and Luis Diaz all competing for playing time. However, there are still questions about Mohamed Salah's long-term future, and Abraham could potentially be a solid replacement if the Egyptian star departs this summer.
