5 developing Celtic transfer headlines on Bernardo, Vardy, Tierney, Idah and Jota

Buzzing Brendan Rodgers has revealed he is itching to begin another season as Celtic boss.

And now supporters – basking in the glow of a turbo-charged race to the double – are hoping the power brokers at Parkhead keep the good vibes coming with a signing statement of intent. It felt the Irishman was never better in his role perched within the Celtic dugout as he overcame a misfiring summer transfer window to deliver the two biggest trophies in Scottish football.

A seat at the richest ever Champions League banquet has been secured and now fans want incomings. Joe Hart is gone and Matt O'Riley will be hard to keep with a clutch of heavy hitters eyeing his services. Record Sport lays out the current state of play and what fans can expect ahead of the first team returning to match action against Ayr United on Friday night.

Paulo Bernardo

Pictures emerged of the Benfica man going through his fitness test this week and that followed reports from Portugal that work needs to be done in order to seal his permanent return to Celtic. The midfielder enjoyed a mostly positive 12 months in Glasgow and is keen to return to Celtic on a long-term deal. Now Record report Bernardo is playing the waiting game as Benfica lean on their world best youth academy to blood six more emerging talents. They state Bernardo is "waiting on an agreement" to reunite him with Brendan Rodgers' side.

Jamie Vardy

Celtic fans hoped for fireworks but a transfer spectacular is yet to materialise. And that is probably summed up by a radio shout over signing Jamie Vardy sparking fierce debate among punters. It's been a link which has bubbled since Rodgers' return but the 37-year-old – who worked with the Irishman at Leicester – is under contract with the Foxes until next summer but speculation remains over his viability to lead the line for Leicester in the Premier League. Vardy is set to be a key man under new boss Steve Cooper, however, there's a sizeable section of the Celtic fanbase who are not against the idea of turning to the former England international.

Kieran Tierney

Tierney was, at one time, being talked up for a £50m transfer to Manchester City with his rampaging displays in the dark days of the early Mikel Arteta era viewed as a beacon of light during some challenging times. But not the Scotland international – on the sidelines after a hamstring injury at Euro 2024 – is about to see two doors shut for good.

Arsenal are open to selling the Celtic hero for £10m and now Arteta is charging ahead in his bid to sign Riccardo Calafiori. The Bologna standout is a centre back by trade but Arteta loves four towering defenders across his backline and appears perfect to play on the left. And a return to Real Sociedad is a non-starter as they close in on a deal for Manchester City's Sergio Gomez.

Adam Idah

Record Sport revealed Celtic are charging ahead in their pursuit of Adam Idah and if it was up to the Celtic dressing room they would have him back yesterday. Liam Scales talked up his Republic of Ireland team-mate and how much his team-mates adore him. Scales said: "He has a craic with everybody. You need people like that. On top of leaders like Joe and Cal you need others who balance it out I suppose. He was massive for us and scored massive goals and put in massive performances. We would love to have him back, but it is out of our control.”

Celtic fans are fully aware it's been an unmitigated disaster in Saudi Arabia for the player who swapped Parkhead for Al-Ittihad in a £25m deal last summer. But multiple reports out of the middle east now claim Jota is free to leave on loan with enquiries over a permanent deal leading to little. Celtic fans would love the cherished winger to return and while it likely remains a long shot, there is renewed hope with a report last week stating the 25-year-old would love to 'go back' to Celtic.
