The 7 Best New Shows on Netflix in October 2023

October arrived early in New York. Over September’s last week, temperatures have hovered in the mid- to low-60s. Pumpkin spice flows from every coffee shop. The Yankees started their MLB playoff season in August and were eliminated a month later. (Don’t ask about the Mets — or the Jets, for that matter.)

Netflix is following in the Big Apple’s footsteps, not only with its new season of “The Great British Baking Show” (can anyone say “apple picking week”?!) but with an early start to trick-or-treating. Mike Flanagan’s latest trauma-centric limited series premieres October 12, a full two-and-a-half weeks before All Hallows’ Eve. Two seasons of “Ghost Hunters” will be available a week later, and this month’s scariest offering is being held back until the week of Halloween: “The UnXplained with William Shatner” drops its third season October 25. (In our day-and-age of algorithm-driven entertainment, nothing is more frightening than a show that purposefully misspells its title.)

More from IndieWire

October offerings lean trick-ish on Netflix. Aside from Flanagan’s prospective treat, there’s no reason to believe “Big Mouth” will suddenly drop off in Season 7, and “Life on Our Planet” could be quite the spectacle (given Industrial Light and Magic’s involvement). But the rest of our top picks aren’t exactly must-see series. “Super Pumped” was a one-and-done anthology on Showtime. “Beckham” isn’t exactly the most in-demand subject for a four-hour documentary. Honestly, due to the fervent recommendations of friends with kids, “LEGO Ninjago” very nearly cracked this month’s best list. To say it’s a bit scary out there may be overstating things, but we’re not far off. Go watch some good reruns, everyone.
