The 7 Best Watches of the Week, From Max Verstappen’s TAG Heuer to Jeremy Strong’s Richard Mille

It appears a Rolex is the wrist candy of choice for star athletes. Carlos Alcaraz, Tom Brady, and Roger Federer stepped out wearing Rollies this week, proving the Daytona and Yacht-Master II are well suited to an active lifestyle. Max Verstappen differed from his fellow sportsmen, flaunting a custom TAG Heuer Monaco on the podium after winning the F1 Grand Prix of Canada. The chronograph is a one-off, so we can’t blame him for wanting to show it off.

Actors are more into Cartiers, apparently. Taika Waititi was spotted in a Tank Française, while Jake Gyllenhaal flashed another Santos. Jeremy Strong defied the Cariter convention, opting for a striking Richard Mille RM 67-01 instead. We do love a horophile who challenges the status quo.

Max Verstappen: TAG Heuer Monaco

The custom chronograph TAG Heuer gifted Max Verstappen at the Monaco GP honors his racing legacy. It is rather fitting, then, that the three-time F1 champ and TAG Heuer ambassador showed it off on the podium after winning the Grand Prix of Canada. A modern take on the iconic Monaco, the bold Split-Second chronograph features a square titanium case and a skeletonized titanium movement (Calibre TH81-00) with an intricate “rattrapante” complication. The Verstappen tributes are the highlight, though. The hour counter is inscribed with the years he won the championship, the chronograph minute counter is engraved with his name, and the sapphire dial shows his number one. You’ll also spot his famous lion’s head symbol if you look carefully.

Jeremy Strong: Richard Mille RM 67-01

Jeremy Strong channeled his Succession character Kendall Roy at an event in New York this week. The actor sported the same flashy Richard Mille as his fictional counterpart did in the final season of the hit HBO series. Released in 2016, the RM 67-01 Automatic Extra Flat features a 38.7 mm tonneau-shaped titanium case and a striking skeletonized dial that reveals a slender movement (CRMA6) of just 3.6 mm. The oversized numerals are sculpted from metal and filled with Luminova, while the date display is positioned vertically at five o’clock. The piece originally retailed at $85,000, but can now run you six figures on the secondary market.

Carlos Alcaraz: Rolex Daytona

New title, same watch: Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open last Sunday, hoisting the trophy with the same Rolex from his 2023 Wimbledon victory on his wrist. The 21-year-old Spanish tennis star, who is now the youngest man to win a Grand Slam title on all three surfaces, showed off a Cosmograph Daytona (Ref. 116519LN) with an 18-karat yellow-gold case, a black Cerachrom bezel, an otherworldly meteorite dial, and a black Oysterflex bracelet. Meteorite dials were a fixture of the Rolex portfolio for several years, but the asteroid-derived material was discontinued for the Daytona models in 2023. As such, timepieces like Alcaraz’s go for about $100,000 on the secondary market.

Jake Gyllenhaal: Cartier Santos

Another day, another Cartier on the wrist of Jake Gyllenhaal. The American actor, who was named the Parisian jeweler’s first watch ambassador in 2018, wore a large steel Santos to the premiere of his new series Presumed Innocent in New York this week. Priced at $7,750, this iteration features a 39.8 mm steel case, a silvered opaline dial with sword-shaped steel hands, a seven-sided crown set with a faceted synthetic spinel, and a steel bracelet. Gyllenhaal has also been spotted in a gold Santos and a two-tone Santos. May we suggest an all-black version next?

Tom Brady: Rolex Daytona

NFL GOAT Tom Brady wore the GOAT of Rolexes to be inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame on Wednesday. The retired quarterback and noted horophile sported what appeared to be a Daytona (Ref. 116520) at the ceremony. (He was papped from pretty far away, okay.) Produced from 2000 to 2016, this model carried many of the design signatures of the original 1960s Daytona but received a new in-house chronograph movement. Brady’s example features a 40 mm stainless steel case, a steel bracelet, and a steel bezel with a Tachymeter scale. It also showcases a chic white dial with three silver subdials and three, six, and nine o’clock. Such examples will cost you upward of $20,000 on the secondary market.

Taika Waititi: Cartier Tank Française Watch

Taika Waititi has a great taste in wrist candy. The Kiwi filmmaker, who has previously been spotted in watches by Jacob & Co., Tudor, and Cartier, flaunted another elegant timepiece at the Peabody Awards in Beverley Hills this week. The Cartier appears to be a two-tone Tank Française (Ref. 2032), though Waititi didn’t flaunt it enough that we can say for certain. Released in the late ‘90s, the watch features stainless steel and 18-karat yellow gold on the case and bracelet, as well as a silver dial with black Roman numerals and a date window at 6 o’clock. The Tank Française is still in Cartier’s catalog, but the dual-colored reference has been discontinued. As such, the Ref. 2032 will cost you several thousand on the secondary market. One was recently offered at Sotheby’s with an estimate of between $2,000 and $3,000.

Roger Federer: Rolex Yacht-Master II

Tennis star and Rolex ambassador Roger Federer wore an ace Rollie to the New York premiere of his new documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days this week. Unveiled at Watches and Wonders in 2023, the Yacht-Master II (Ref. 226627) features a 42 mm case in RLX titanium, a bold black dial, a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a Cerachrom insert, and a titanium Oyster bracelet. The sports watch is ultra-lightweight yet strong enough for the court. It will set you back $14,050.
