8 Holby City spoilers for next week

Next week's hard-hitting episode of Holby City will feature some of the show's harrowing scenes of the year as Helen and Lofty's baby dies.

The storyline will pave the way for a heartbreaking time for Lofty, Helen and Dom as the come to terms with their tragic loss and deal with the devastating effects it has on their lives.

Also ahead on Tuesday, Jac's mental health problems will intensify, while Sacha struggles with his secret feelings for Essie. Here's a full collection of next week's spoilers:

1. Helen confesses her feelings for Lofty

When a brave Helen arrives back at the hospital, she admits her true feelings for Lofty and suggests they make a go of things.

Feeling awkward, Lofty gently lets her down but paints a beautiful picture of what their future will look like.

Tragically, neither are prepared for the devastating news that is about to tear their world apart.

2. Lofty and Helen's baby dies

Holby City has already confirmed that it will be airing a stillbirth storyline in next week's episode, when Helen and Lofty's baby dies.

When Helen explains how she hasn't felt the baby move in over a day, the doctors later confirm that they have been unable to find a heartbeat.

Lee Mead, who plays Lofty, says: “After knowing people close to me who have sadly been through a similar experience, I think it’s really important and brave for Holby City to shine a light on the reality that some families have to face. I’m really proud to have been a part of it.”

Simon Harper, Executive Producer of Holby City and Casualty, added: “The loss of the baby is terrible for Helen, and we also felt that the father’s perspective is traditionally perhaps overlooked. Lofty and Dom’s relationship gives us the chance to explore that. Lee, David and Verity all give beautifully pitched performances in a heart-breaking episode.”

3. Sacha tries to get through to Jac

Horrified after learning Jac has given up Emma, Sacha makes a desperate attempt at changing his friend's mind.

Sacha reflects on his own fractured relationship with estranged son Daniel in order to make Jac see sense, but is forced to back down when she insists it was a mutual decision.

Realising he is fighting a losing battle, Sacha agrees to let the situation lie and supports Jac as she attends an important meeting about the death of her patient.

4. Jac continues to struggle

As Jac continues to struggle with her mental health, her behaviour will become increasingly erratic as she faces some difficult questions about a patient's death.

While some of her colleagues start to wonder if she was fit to operate at all, Jac attempts to go about her medical duties as normal – with worrying consequences.

5. Elliot is finally honest

Although a trouble Elliot does his best to rally support for Jac ahead of Darwin’s Mortality and Morbidity review, a further discovery leaves him realising he can no longer hide his concerns.

When some information from Nicky confirms that Jac wasn't fit to perform surgery, Elliot approaches the topic with the doctor and questions whether she could be struggling with a mental health problem.

After some interference from Kian, Elliot also tells Jac he is ill – but explains that he isn't sure if she should be the one to operate on him.

6. Xavier makes a big decision

Xavier will have his conscience prickled when an acquaintance from his past is admitted to Holby with some worrying symptoms.

Not only is Xavier given a huge reality check over his actions, , it also prompts to evaluate his working relationship with Donna – much to her frustration.

Unsurprisingly, Donna doesn't share the same views as Xavier does on the subject – and it's not long before they are coming to blows. Can they relationship survive this?

7. Donna revisits her past

As Dom struggles to find his place in the wake of their tragic loss, he finds support in the form of Donna – who urges him not to runaway from his feelings.

Donna opens up to Dom about her own tragic experience several years ago and promises him that he's not alone.

Following her heart to heart with Dom, Donna also confides Xav about the baby she lost and takes the opportunity to tell him how committed she is to their future.

8. Bea is back

When Bea comes back into the hospital with a serious infection, he continues to let his feelings for her cloud his medical judgement.

Kian faces an anxious wait as Bea is rushed into emergency theatre, but will she pull through? Or does more heartbreak await Kian?

Holby City airs these scenes on Tuesday, November 19 at 8pm on BBC One.
