Casualty kicked off its brand new series last week, meaning there's a whole host of new stories, new twists and new characters coming your way.

Following a highly dramatic series finale, the BBC medical drama has hit the ground running with series 34 – and it's only just warming up.

As the show heads into autumn, we've rounded up some of the biggest stories you should be keeping an eye on over the coming months.

1. Ethan's controversial romance

We've known for a few weeks now that this series would see Ethan back at the forefront and tonight's episode was just the start.

Saturday's scenes saw Ethan put himself on the line for his friend's daughter, Effie – who has cystic fibrosis. Despite being aware that Effie probably wouldn't be eligible for the treatment trial the hospital are running, Ethan doctored her notes in the hope it would give her a chance.

As the story unravels over the coming months, Ethan will grow increasingly close to Effie, with George Rainsford teasing their connection could eventually turn romantic.

Speaking to Digital Spy recently, he said: "There is the introduction of romance quite soon. It's not without its issues as well. So yeah, watch this space on that one."

2. David's nightmare

David will take centre stage next week's highly dramatic episode, which will kick start a brand new challenge for the sweet-natured nurse.

When David's son Ollie runs into terrifying trouble, it's down to David to try and save him – with huge repercussions for everyone involved.

Speaking to Digital Spy about David's ordeal, Jason Durr – who plays him – said: "It's very dramatic and a lot happens. It was really enjoyable to shoot because Harry – who plays – Ollie a fine actor and we are very lucky to have him on the show. We work really well together and he's always willing to go that extra mile.

"When we have to shoot the stuff in the river, he was only too willing to do it so we both jumped into the water on about three or four runs. The team at Casualty are fantastic and so supportive, so were able to come together and do something really special.

3. New boy Mason is not all he seems

Casualty welcomed a new face in the ED tonight, as F1 doctor Mason turned up for his first shift. Victor Oshin has been cast in the role of Mason, who is abrupt, cocky, over-confident and sees himself as a bit of a high-flier.

We've already seen how Mason doesn't appear to be worried about making friends and had absolutely no qualms in throwing his mentor Rash under the bus.

As it happens, tonight's incident won't be the first time Mason lands one of his colleagues in hot water. But keep a close eye on this one, as all might not be as it seems.

4. More turmoil for Rash

In addition to the above, Rash is going to face some more big challenges throughout this series as he struggles to navigate his return to medicine.

Not only is Rash grieving for his mum, but he will also find it increasingly difficult to juggle his responsibilities to his struggling dad and absent girlfriend Gem – who is set on remaining in Thailand.

Having landed himself in trouble with his boss Dylan tonight, there's every chance this might not be the first time Rash will be forced to protest his innocence...

5. Archie's new mission

Following her harrowing ordeal during the series finale, Archie is back to her feisty, fiery best when she returns to work next month.

Determined not to let her traumatic experience hold her back, Archie dives head first into a patient's complicated story – and later decides to take revenge. Has she not learned her lesson about getting too involved?

6. Dixie's return…

Fans are in for a treat over the autumn when popular paramedic Dixie pops back to the ED. Jane Hazelgrove has reprised her role as Dixie, who is now working as part of the HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) team.

Dixie will be seen assisting the paramedic team with a young lad, who has a life-threatening chest injury, and her reappearance will leave her old pal Iain with some big decisions to make about his future. Speaking of which...

7. Iain's exit

It's the moment we've all been dreading, but sadly, Iain's swan song is sadly very imminent. It was confirmed back in May that Michael Stevenson would be bowing out of his role of Iain at the end of his current storyline – with Dixie's return seemingly setting the wheels in motion for him to depart.

Watching Dixie in her new line of work will leave a lasting impression on Iain and ultimately prompting him to think about his own career decisions. So, does this mean he'll be tempted to follow her into the HEMS team?

8. Duffy's story continues

Duffy might no longer work in the ED but her story will continue to tug at your heartstrings throughout the course of the series.

In fact, Duffy plays a big role in next week's episode following her decision to go back to work and her storyline will continue to take centre stage over the coming months.

9. Dylan in charge

Dylan is now the clinical lead following Connie's shock departure earlier in the month, but unfortunately, he hasn't got the best track record in the role.

This time though, Dylan appears to be taking it in his stride and he's about to be given some encouraging news about the ED's targets. But with one of the underlying themes of the series being 'The NHS Under Pressure, is Dylan really up to the challenge of running the department?

Casualty continues on Saturday, August 31 on BBC One.
