Police have arrested a ninth suspect in connection with the fatal beating of a 17-year-old boy outside of a Las Vegas high school, authorities said.

On Wednesday, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) said in a press release that a ninth suspect, whose name has not been released, was arrested and booked into the Clark County Juvenile Hall for open murder.

“Detectives still need help identifying one outstanding person of interest in this homicide,” the release states. “The individual was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and khaki pants.”

The ninth arrest comes a little over a week after eight other suspects, between the ages of 13-17, were arrested on similar charges after videos circulated on social media of Jonathan Lewis Jr. getting beat up by several teens.

The attack happened on Nov. 1 in an alleyway east of the Rancho High School, and all the witnesses, suspects and attendees of the brawl involved were students from that school, Lt. Jason Johansson with the LVMPD’s homicide unit said at a Nov. 14 press conference.

He also noted that the fight was "over a pair of stolen wireless headphones" and “possibly” over a marijuana vape pen which may have been stolen from Lewis Jr. or his friends.

“What you see in the video though is approximately ten subjects kicking, stomping and punching our victim Jonathan as he’s on the ground, not defending himself until the point where he becomes unconscious,” Johansson added.

A citizen nearby who saw Lewis Jr. on the ground, carried him back to the high school, where 911 was called, Johansson said. The victim was then taken to a local hospital, where investigators determined that he “had sustained non-survival, head trauma.”

On Nov. 7, six days after the beating, police said they were notified that Lewis was medically declared brain dead, and a subsequent autopsy revealed that his cause of death was blunt force trauma. His death was ruled a homicide.

A GoFundMe campaign has since been created by Lewis Jr.’s father, Jonathan Lewis Sr., who remembered his son as "a kind, loving, gentle young man who has the heart of a champion and the brightest loving energy that attracts people to him with love.”

“Jonathan Lewis Jr. was a hero [who] was trying to defend his friend,” the grieving father wrote. “[Lewis Jr.] loves his friends and family so much and was an aspiring artist.”
