MaXXXine” is entering the spotlight a little earlier than expected, thanks to a fluffer of a film sneak peek.

Ti West’s “X” is set in 1979, with a group of young filmmakers directing and starring in an adult film in rural Texas. Yet when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the cast find themselves fighting for their lives, and a slasher ensues. Mia Goth’s wannabe starlet Maxine finds herself in a lead role for the adult feature, and also is suddenly the sole survivor after crazed old lady Pearl (also played by Goth) goes on a murderous rampage. Of course, Pearl herself got an eponymous prequel film; “MaXXXine” caps off West’s trilogy and continues Maxine’s storyline post-massacre.

West’s “X” debuted at the 2022 SXSW Film & TV Festival, with sequel “Pearl” making its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival followed by its North American debut at TIFF.

Tickets for the June 18 re-release of “X” are available here via Fandango. Screenings begin at 7 p.m. local time. “MaXXXine” will later be released July 5 in theaters.

West’s “MaXXXine” is considered one of IndieWire’s most anticipated films of 2024. The film takes place in 1980s Hollywood, where adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx (Goth) finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past, per the official “MaXXXine” synopsis.

The ensemble film co-stars Halsey, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon.

Writer/director West teased to Total Film that “MaXXXine” is just as “hardcore” as Schrader’s filmography, with high concept tie-ins of “The Terminator” and “Vice Squad.”

“It’s poppy, but still grounded in more of a grittier ’80s than a shopping-mall ’80s,” West said. “You’re seeing the glamorous side of the movie business and the seedy side of Hollywood.”

He added that “MaXXXine” ranges from “a ‘Terminator’-like aesthetic to a Paul Schrader hardcore thing to ‘Vice Squad’ to giallo.”

A24 has recently re-released a slew of films on IMAX, including Ari Aster’s director’s cut of “Midsommar,” Mat Whitecross’ “Oasis: Supersonic,” and Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The A24 x IMAX Present screening series continues every month for the next year, with IMAX digitally remastering classics from A24’s premium library of more than 140 feature films. Previous remastered and launched films include “Ex Machina,” “Hereditary,” and “Uncut Gems.”
