A24 Is Re-Releasing ‘Ex Machina,’ ‘Hereditary,’ and ‘Uncut Gems’ in IMAX

A24 is really getting big. And we now mean that literally.

The indie studio is partnering with IMAX to re-release some of its most beloved films on IMAX screens, remastering movies from its library as part of a monthly screening series that will continue into 2025.

It kicks off with Alex Garland’s “Ex Machina” on March 27, followed by Ari Aster’s ‘Hereditary” on April 24, and the Safdie Brothers’ “Uncut Gems” on May 22. The screening of “Ex Machina” will precede a special sneak peek of Garland’s next movie with A24, “Civil War,” which also opens on IMAX screens on April 12.

Other titles haven’t been announced yet, but the studio will dig through its library of more than 140 feature films for future screenings. Can we humbly request “The Green Knight,” “Moonlight,” and “Under the Skin”?

A24 has dipped its toes into IMAX before, most recently remastering the Talking Heads concert film “Stop Making Sense,” which included all four members of the iconic rock group reuniting for the first time in more than 20 years. “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Beau is Afraid” also played in limited engagements in IMAX, and the distributor recently held a live event for the 25th anniversary of Darren Aronofsky’s “Pi.

The A24 screenings will be held across more than 300 IMAX locations nationwide and select locations internationally. Tickets will be on sale at www.imax.com/a24.

Also on deck for IMAX is Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and is set at Warner Bros. It will be released wide into IMAX theaters in August 2025.

For A24, just this week we learned about Aster beginning production imminently on his fourth feature for the studio, a contemporary Western called “Eddington” starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone.

IMAX has been riding high on the success of cinematic spectacles like “Oppenheimer” and “Dune: Part Two,” as well as smaller titles like “The Boy and the Heron” and the previously mentioned “Stop Making Sense.” Winning the battle for IMAX screens (and the premium ticket price that comes with it) has become increasingly competitive, so A24 is smart to coax its cult of fans into the habit of seeing its movies on the biggest screen possible.
