Aaron Danks completes Bayern Munich move as Middlesbrough compensation package agreed

Aaron Danks has completed his move from Middlesbrough to Bayern Munich, with The German giants confirming the former assistant to Michael Carrick as part of Vincent Kompnay's new coaching team.

Danks was a shock summer exit for Boro, with Kompany targeting the Boro assistant to join him at Bayern Munich having worked briefly together at Anderlecht before Danks' move to Aston Villa. Negotiations between Boro and Bayern have been ongoing since news of Bayern's interest first emerged, with Boro eventually agreeing an unknown compensation package for the coach to explore an exciting opportunity with the German giants.

For Boro, the important factor once it became clear that Danks would be leaving this summer was finding a replacement. They were granted permission from Newcastle United to speak to Carrick's brother Graeme. He was coaching the Magpies' under-18s and is now expected to join Boro's first-team coaching set-up as Danks' replacement.

Danks had served as one of two assistant coaches to Carrick in his first role in management at Boro. As well as Danks, Jonathan Woodgate held the assistant coach role at the Riverside, and the former Boro head coach will now continue in that role as sole assistant coach.

Now 20 months into the role at the Riverside, and with a keenness to be as hands-on as possible when it comes to training, Carrick isn't understood to have placed a huge significance on directly replacing Danks with another coach at assistant level. Woodgate has proved a valuable right-hand man for Carrick.

Instead, Graeme is likely to arrive as first-team coach alongside Grant Leadbitter and is seen as someone who can complement the coaching team and ideas of Carrick and Woodgate, while perhaps bringing something a little different to the table with his vast experience of developing younger players. It's something head of football Kieran Scott suggested when asked before Danks' exit if they would replace him.

Scott said: "I think he will need replacing but we'll assess that situation. In the Premier League, the budget is endless and you have coaches for coaches. In the Championship, it's normally a first-team head coach and his assistant and then someone helping them.

"We haven't had that. We've had two assistants and Michael. Then we've got Grant who is heavily involved in stuff too. So we're well stocked. I think Michael will look to bring someone in, but it's likely to be someone who has a different skill set to Aaron."

As well as his coaching, Danks' wide network in football had proven useful to Boro over the last two seasons. Having worked for many years in the FA as a youth coach and before that with West Brom. Danks used past connections to help Boro secure signings such as Cameron Archer, Aaron Ramsey, Morgan Rogers and Alex Gilbert.

He now moves on to this new opportunity at one of Europe's biggest clubs, however, as they look to get back on track after a rare trophy-less campaign last term. Danks will officially start his new role on July 15 when Bayern players return for pre-season as Boro now look to get Carrick's younger brother signed up for the start of their own pre-season next week.
