Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been accused by Manchester United legend Andy Cole of 'mugging off' goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who he believes should seek a move away from the Emirates Stadium.

Despite potentially finishing the season with a Premier League winners' medal, it's been a tough year for Ramsdale. The 25-year-old keeper has been limited to just six league appearances after being demoted to second choice behind new signing David Raya.

Ramsdale, formerly of Sheffield United and Bournemouth, has only been in the starting lineup for two league games since Raya's arrival both against Brentford, where Raya is ineligible to play against his parent club. Cole suggests the Arsenal manager hasn't treated the goalkeeper fairly.

In a conversation with Betfred, Cole expressed his views: "Nine times out of ten, when a player moves to a different club, they're meant to be their new club's number one centre-forward, centre-half, goalkeeper or whatever it may be.

"If Aaron makes the move, he will be Newcastle's number one goalkeeper. I think he's been hard done by, I really do. He was so good for Arsenal last season and then all of a sudden, Mikel Arteta has gone out and got a new goalkeeper and initially claimed that he had two number ones, which was complete nonsense from day one.

"The way he's disregarded Ramsdale has been really disrespectful. He's mugged him off basically.

"I like how he goes about his business and he deserves to be treated with a bit more respect, so if he does move on from Arsenal, then he certainly would do a good job at Newcastle."

Ramsdale was Arsenal's undisputed No. 1 for 18 months, until Raya moved to the Emirates Stadium. Since his unceremonious demotion, he was briefly linked with a move to Chelsea.

However, with young keeper Djordje Petrovic impressing in the second half of the season, those links appear to have cooled for the time being.
