“The Acolyte” star Amandla Stenberg drops new song in response to ‘intolerable racism’

The actor and her “Star Wars” series have both faced hatred from conservative and racist audiences.

Amandla Stenberg has no patience for racists, so she’s using her musical talents as a force for good.

In a new song, the Bodies Bodies Bodies star, who uses she/they pronouns, reflected on the new wave of online attention they’ve received as the lead of the Star Wars series The Acolyte, which has been review-bombed by homophobic and/or racist bigots. The track, “Discourse,” features a refrain of “We so bored, don’t f--- wit yo discourse” and addresses the hatred and prejudice the actor received over the course of their career.

Stenberg posted the song alongside a self-directed music video with the caption, “Happy Juneteenth 🖤and to those who are flooding me with intolerable racism— since it took me 72 hours on my laptop to make this song and video, u got 72 hours to respond. and I expect choreo!!”

The song begins with references to an “interview from 2018 with Trevor the king” (Trevor Noah, that is) going viral on social media this past month. Bad-faith critics piled on a six-year-old clip promoting the film The Hate U Give, wherein Stenberg stated that “white people crying actually was the goal” of the movie, which depicts the aftermath of a Black teenager’s murder by a police officer. “They splice lines, make hate they recognize, make it look like the same propaganda that they spew/ Cuz they conflate our pain with violence and try to weaponize everything that we do,” Stenberg sings, criticizing conservative social media users for attempting to frame her words as racist by taking them out of context.

In the next verse of the song, Stenberg criticized right-wing pundits and racists for co-opting “woke” as a catch-all term for progressive or diverse ideas they despise. “They spinning WOKE, bastardize it and appropriate it/Last I recall, WOKE was something we created, speak truth to power, keep an eye out for you silly racists,” she sings. “And now they use it to describe anything they threatened by/Remember when Gambino put it in the zeitgeist?” she says in reference to Childish Gambino’s 2016 hit “Redbone,” which helped popularize the phrase “stay woke.”

Later, the Hunger Games star called out the media for fanning the flames of the bigoted backlash against her by reporting on racist criticism of her. “Journalists I’m looking at you/ Did you forget it’s your job to provide the truth?” Stenberg asks. “Spreading divisiveness mining the metrics and data, seems you gave up all your ethics for money and views.”

The track is far from Stenberg’s first musical venture — she also plays the violin and has released several singles on music streaming services including “Wicked Animals” and “Be Mine.” She also sang in the film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen in 2021.
