Romance is alive and well, and living at Pizza Express in Dorset.

After finding out what a date is, five-year-old Freddie Gibson asked his BFF Dee Dee Jones out and these heart-melting snaps show the whole adorable shebang.

Freddie and Dee Dee have been friends since birth and as they’ve grown up together, the inseparable duo have had countless play-dates – but recently sensible Freddie has started to see free-spirited Dee Dee in a whole new light.

Mum-of-one Nina, 37, said: “Freddie took a shine to Dee Dee – it’s quite an easy name so it was one of the first he started saying.”

Being able to say someone’s name isn’t necessarily the best way to choose your partner, but in the age of Tinder it’s also not the worst.

After seeing his mum Nina and dad Ian go out on a date, Freddie asked what one is - and when he heard it involved spending time with someone you really like he said, “Well, I’d like to take Dee Dee on a date.”

"He decided he had to wait until she turned five, and when she did at the end of March they started planning it,” Nina added.

"They decided to go to Pizza Express – he bought her flowers, and she had a new dress and her hair done all nicely. It was so lovely and sweet – they held hands all the way.”

All the parents sat at a different table on the other side of the restaurant and kept an eye on the little lovebirds.

Adorable Freddie had saved his birthday money to pay for the date - but staff at Pizza Express in Christchurch were so taken with the endearing couple that they gave them their meal on the house.

“We asked if he’d like to take her out again,” Nina continued. “And he said ‘yes, because she’s beautiful’.

"If you ask Freddie who his girlfriend is, he’ll say Dee Dee – but he might also say some others at the same time! He’s a typical five-year-old.”

Freddie sounds pretty intently set on Dee Dee - he’s got plans to move them to Birmingham and has already mapped out who’ll do the chores (Dee Dee) - although both families say they’d never push the two into dating for real when they’re older.

Dee Dee’s mum Katy, 35, said: "Since they could talk, Freddie has been adamant that he and Dee Dee will grow up and get married – and she seems quite happy to go along with it!”

Although Dee Dee had such a good time she asked if they could have another date, mum says she won’t call him her boyfriend.
