'Aggressive' West Country nurse shouted and threatened to hit elderly resident

An "aggressive" nurse has been banned after he shouted at a resident and threatened to hit him. Abdikadir Hassan Mohamed worked as a nurse at Culverhayes Nursing Home in Bath, a nursing home for residents with dementia in 2021.

But on April 12, 2021, Mr Mohamed was judged to have behaved in an aggressive, threatening and demeaning manner towards a resident in that he shouted at him, told him to hit him and threatened to strike him. His behaviour caused distress to the resident and another, with stunned colleagues looking on.

Mr Mohamed was suspended by the Nursing and Midwifery Council following a previous hearing, with a panel gathering to consider whether he should be stricken off the nursing register. He was said to have escalated the situation as he shouted at the resident, known as Resident B, and reportedly told him to go to his room.

Colleagues observed Mr Mohamed invited Resident B to hit him and also got very close to the resident and said he would strike him. He later shouted “If you are a resident then behave as a resident”.

The NMC panel heard Mr Mohamed’s “aggressive behaviour” caused distress to Resident B, nearby Resident C and three staff members. The panel, which met in June, observed Mr Mohamed had been sacked by the nursing home on April 16, 2021.

A previous panel observed: “The panel noted that the incident did not just traumatise one resident, there were other residents and care workers present. There were a range of people affected by his misconduct.

“As a registered nurse Mr Mohamed should have de-escalated the situation but Mr Mohamed actually appeared to escalate it which is the opposite of what would be expected. It noted that the onus is on Mr Mohamed to demonstrate he has taken steps to strengthen his practice and show that he is no longer impaired.”

A previous hearing requested Mr Mohamed to speak to the NMC to offer some insight into his misconduct and evidence of any remorse or rehabilitation since. The panel were “disappointed” that Mr Mohamed had failed to engage with the NMC.

After reviewing the original incident and a lack of updates from Mr Mohamed since his suspension, the panel opted to remove him from the nursing register.

The panel concluded: “In these circumstances, the panel determined that a further period of suspension would not serve any useful purpose. The panel decided that as a result of Mr Mohamed’s persistent disengagement and failure to demonstrate safe practice and insight into his serious misconduct, his conduct is now fundamentally incompatible with him remaining on the NMC Register.

“The panel therefore determined that it was necessary to take action to prevent Mr Mohamed from practising in the future and concluded that the only sanction that would adequately protect the public and serve the public interest was a striking-off order.

“The panel therefore directs the registrar to strike Mr Mohamed’s name off the NMC Register.”

The striking-off order will take effect upon the expiry of the current suspension order on August 6, 2024. This ban removes Mr Mohamed from the register, which prevents them from working as a registered nurse, midwife or nursing associate.
