Ahsoka is bringing back an unexpected feature of the Star Wars movies to the small screen, an aspect of the franchise that has not yet been seen in its Disney+ shows: An opening crawl.

The opening crawl is an iconic part of George Lucas' Stars Wars saga, it is a device that was first used in the 1977 original and has been included in all of the live action films that followed with the exception of spin-offs Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The Skywalker saga is comprised of nine films in total, the original trilogy (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi), the prequel trilogy (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith), and the sequel trilogy (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker).

Lucas first began using the opening crawl as a homage to Flash Gordon, he greatly enjoyed the serials on television as a child and they even helped inspire the filmmaker to create the story of Star Wars.

It hasn't been included in any of the Disney+ Star Wars shows though, until now. Ahsoka brings back the opening crawl with some slight yet unique changes that make it stand out from the iconic text used in the Skywalker saga.

In the Star Wars movies, the opening crawl has always been written in yellow typeface with the writing of the opening crawl moving away into the distance.

Once the text has been shown in its entirety and has disappeared into the distance the camera then pans downwards and the story begins (in Attack of the Clones the camera panned upwards).

Ahsoka is different because its opening crawl is written in red, rather than yellow, and the text scrolls vertically from the bottom of the screen to the top without fading away into the distance.

This differentiation lets the series pay homage to Lucas' original vision for the Star Wars franchise while also allowing Ahsoka to stand on its own merit.

Ahsoka follows its titular character as she begins to investigate the whereabouts of a map that will lead her to the location of Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen), one of the Galactic Empire's main leaders who was previously thought to be dead alongside rebel Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) after the events of Star Wars: Rebels.

That Thrawn has red eyes may point towards the thought that has gone into the design of the opening crawl in Ahsoka, although this may be a stretch.

Hopefully, viewers may soon learn the reason why show creator Dave Filoni chose to begin the series with this opening crawl in particular.

Ahsoka premieres with its first two episodes on Disney+ on Wednesday, 23 August.
