Poldark's famously shirt-averse leading man Aidan Turner is back with a brand new project, Leonardo, which sees him portraying legendary artist Leonardo Da Vinci.

A first look trailer of the upcoming TV series has been released, showing the actor walking around dimly lit rooms looking all serious while dramatic music plays. There's also a glimpse of him getting ready to paint The Last Supper.

The eight-part series comes from The X-Files writer and American producer Frank Spotnitz and British writer Steve Thompson, while The Man in the High Castle's Daniel Percival is one of the directors.

It also stars The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore, Giancarlo Giannini and Matilda De Angelis.

Poldark wrapped up its fifth and final series last year, with the main character telling his pregnant other half Demelza that was sailing off to France, but would return one day. Was that a message to fans as well to her?

"It doesn't feel like an ending," he said last year while speaking to Digital Spy.

"I don't think that is the BBC being crafty and keeping it open-ended for another series in time, but [while] it feels right, it doesn't feel final final.

"In 10 years time, Debbie [Horsfield, creator/writer] may come with a script and it would be nice to revisit it and it might be something she is not interested in doing, and some of us aren't either," he added.

Leonardo is expected to be released next year.
