The Great North Air Ambulance was called to Heworth Metro Station on Monday morning after a man had a suspected cardiac arrest.

The emergency helicopter landed in the car park at the Metro station, although the 70-year-old man who took ill was taken to hospital by road. The man remains in hospital where he is receiving treatment.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 9am today (Monday), we received a report of concern for the welfare of a male at Heworth Metro Station.

"Emergency services attended and a man in his 70s was found to have suffered a suspected cardiac arrest. The man was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital for treatment where he remains."

A statement from the Great North Air Ambulance read: "Our doctor-led team were activated to an incident at 9.09am. They arrived on scene at 9.29am where they worked with the North East Ambulance Service to treat the patient before accompanying them to hospital by road."
