Air France says it is sending a plane from Montreal to Iqaluit after its passengers were stranded when one of its planes made an emergency landing in the Nunavut capital on Tuesday.

The plane is expected to bring passengers to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

In a statement in French, the airline said the plane made a precautionary landing after a burning smell was detected in the cabin.

The plane is grounded while crews look into the issue, the airline said.

The plane landed around 11:41 local time with 260 passengers and 12 crew on board.

The plane, a Boeing 787-900 was headed from Paris to Seattle, the airline said.

From New York, passengers will be rerouted to Seattle as soon as possible.
