Alan Carr’s sitcom Changing Ends has been commissioned for a second series, ITV has announced.

The autobiographical comedy, starring Carr and Oliver Savell as his younger self, is based on his life in Northampton in the 1980s and a childhood growing up as the son of a fourth division football manager.

Series 1 launched on ITVX earlier this year and attracted more viewers than any other comedy on the streaming service.

This renewal comes ahead of the first series launching on ITV1 in 2024, reaching a whole new audience.

"Looks like we’re heading back to Northampton!!" said Alan Carr in a statement.

"Absolutely buzzing that Changing Ends is back for a second series… I have so many more stories from my teenage years growing up in Northampton to tell, about me, my family, my neighbours and, believe it or not, football! Shocker!"

The second series will once again be made by Baby Cow Productions, the team behind hits such as Gavin & Stacey and Alan Partridge.

Baby Cow’s co-founder, and Alan Partridge himself, Steve Coogan said: “Alan Carr, brilliant and beloved as a comedian, broadcaster and writer has made the move into sitcom-making look effortless.

"As thrilled as I am that Baby Cow are getting to make a second series of Changing Ends (very funny/moving, audiences are bound to love the next chapter) I do hope he has to break a sweat this time."

Filming on the new six-part series will begin early next year and is expected to land on ITVX in the summer.

However, the new episodes will sadly be made without co-creator Simon Carlyle, also behind BBC comedy Two Doors Down, who died in August, aged 48.

Producer Mollie Freedman Berthoud paid tribute to him, saying: "We are heartbroken to now have to take these steps without the magnificent Simon Carlyle.

"We miss him & his infectious laughter so much, but we feel honoured to be continuing the beautiful show he co-created."

Changing Ends series 1 is streaming now on ITVX.
