Alan Shearer casts doubt over whether Chelsea can afford Newcastle United star Alexander Isak

Chelsea won't be able to afford the signing of Newcastle United star Alexander Isak and the Sweden international won't leave St James' Park this summer.

That is the blunt view of Magpies legend Alan Shearer who has said he would be 'amazed, angry and disappointed' if the 24-year-old leaves Newcastle this summer.

Isak joined Newcastle in the summer of 2022 and has quickly established himself as the club's talisman, scoring 25 goals in all competitions last season.

Chronicle Live understands Newcastle have received a second enquiry from the Blues to sign Isak, fresh off their £35million sale of Ian Maatsen to Aston Villa.

Newcastle are determined not to lose the forward and any sale would have to be at least double the £63million they paid to sign Isak from Spanish side Real Sociedad.

However, there is an acceptance that Newcastle may need to trade players this summer to ensure they don't fall foul of profit and sustainability rules and the likes of Yankuba Minteh, Elliot Anderson and Anthony Gordon have been linked with moves away from the club this summer.

But Shearer is convinced Isak won't be sold and feels Chelsea would be best served looking elsewhere in their pursuit of a new forward.

"I’m not that worried," Shearer told Betfair. "I don’t think he’ll leave. I don’t think it can happen. Newcastle supporters would go mad if it happened. What he’s brought to Newcastle and how good a player he is, I’m not sure Chelsea could afford him either.

"I’ve seen the reports and I don’t think there’s anything in that at all. I’d be amazed, angry and disappointed if he left Newcastle."
