Alex Jones has been praised by her followers after sharing a poignant post on Instagram to mark D-Day. The One Show presenter shared a rare insight into her family life as she told how she took her two eldest children to The British Normandy Memorial just outside the village of Ver-sur-Mer in France and told them about her grandfather.

Sharing a string of photographs from the trip, which took place last year, Alex told her 355K followers: "One of the first things we did during our French trip last year was visit Ver-sur-Mer in Normandy. Both Charlie and I had been to the area as children but we wanted to go back as adults, especially as we both have close relatives that fought in WW2.

"The #britishnormandymemorial is breathtaking and even though our children are very young, I could still tell Ted about my grandfather, Trevor who fought in the war and explain that the memorial commemorates lots of brave young men and women, some only a decade older than him that fought for our country."

"We camped nearby and both boys had lots of questions that night about what we’d seen that day. They were too young to understand the full meaning of what we’d seen, but they had definitely sensed that it was important and to be respected and we are so glad that we visited."

Alex was quickly flooded with support from fans, as one wrote: "So important to pass the history down the generations," while another added: "I hope to visit some day as it's so important to remember and to carry that history with us."

While a third commented: "We spent many hours visiting all the memorials, when I was a child, and the impact has always remained with me. Those rows and rows of perfect, white headstones can never be forgotten (nor should they be) and likewise the columns, with name after name engraved on them sits firmly in my memories.

"Your boys won’t forget, and just like my generation, they will be forever grateful for the freedom all those brave men gave us." You can keep up to date with the latest TV and showbiz news by signing up to the newsletter here.
