Alexandria to raze longtime eyesore

Apr. 2—ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria will soon eliminate a longtime eyesore.

The property at 415 N. Harrison St. with a detached garage near 103 E. Garfield St. will be demolished by MadCo Excavation.

The city approved the $24,900 contract Monday night. It was one of three bids. A precise demolition date was not announced during the board of works meeting.

The Alexandria Planning Commission issued a demolition order after a hearing in November 2023. During the hearing, the owners were given an opportunity to respond to the evidence presented by Building Commissioner Lance Love.

However, no one showed up.

The building has been a source of frustrations for city officials.

"This is getting ridiculous. I know we're getting the run around, but something has to be done," Councilman Roger Cuneo said during a September meeting. "It needs to go."

He then asked Alexandria's Economic Development Director Alan Moore why the building had occupants at the time. It is unknown whether the building is currently occupied.
