Alfie Evans news: Severely ill baby's parents defended by Piers Morgan who says they should decide son's fate

Piers Morgan has thrown his support behind Alfie Evans’ parents who wish to take their critically ill son to Italy for further treatment.

The Good Morning Britain presenter said the couple should be allowed to do everything in their power to try and save their son’s life and added “miracles do happen.”

On Wednesday, Alfie’s parents were set to issue a last ditch court bid to gain permission to take their son to Italy for treatment despite the High Court ruling that the child could not leave hospital on Tuesday.

His parents revealed that they were forced to give the 23-month-old mouth to mouth in order to keep him alive after he was taken off life support.

Engaging in a heated exchange with TV Doctor Hilary Jones and pro-life campaigner Caroline Farrow, Mr Morgan said: "Alfie's parents want the final choice. Why shouldn't they be allowed that? Shouldn't love be the ultimate way?"

But Dr Jones disagreed and said the kindest thing to do would be to let the child die.

She told Mr Morgan that miracles don’t happen.

To which he replied: “You don’t believe any children ever recover when [doctors] medically believe they can’t?”

She said: "In cases like this where there is a consensus among a lot of experienced doctors they are very rarely wrong."

Speaking outside the Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool, Alfie's father Tom Evans said that he would continue to fight to keep Alfie alive.

“We were doing what a nurse should have been doing to sustain his life.

“Now they are saying that he looks really good but we all know he should be in Italy right now,” he said outside the hospital yesterday.

The High Court said on Tuesday that doctors should consider letting the child, who has been in a “semi-vegetative state” for over a year, go home.

Mr Morgan tweeted: "At least let his parents take him home to die, for goodness sake.
