The Red King launched on Alibi on Wednesday night and a number of viewers who tuned into the mysterious and potentially rather sinister drama, were left confused about one thing - the show was filmed in Northumberland, but a lot of the cast had Welsh accents.

The cast and crew of the six part series were seen on location in various places in the North East last summer, with extras and main stars seen with an array of props in both Craster harbour and village. The Red King filming locations also included Alnwick, Alnmouth and Embleton, as the likes of Vigil and Bodyguard actress Anjli Mohindra and Geordie star Jill Halfpenny shot scenes.

However, within a few minutes of opening credits rolling on The Red King's first episode it became clear that, while the programme was predominantly filmed in northern England, the characters, residents of fictional island St. Jory, were Welsh, with lead star Anjili's character, fed up copper Grace Narayan one of the few not to have that accent, with their being mention of her previously working in Newcastle.

And, as well as The Red King drawing comparisons to legendary film The Wicker Man, the 'relocating' of Northumberland to Wales also became a bit of a talking point on social media. Addressing that, one viewer wrote: "Why not just film #TheRedKing in Wales anyway? Why pretend Northumberland is Wales?"

Others were just happy to see more of Northumberland on their TV screen, with the stunning surroundings of the coast frequently used or hit ITV drama Vera for the last 13 years. Reacting to the familiar location, one local wrote: "Great to see #Craster #Northumberland playing a starring role in the new @alibi_channel series #TheRedKing"
