Ally McCoist accuses Roy Keane of disrespectful 'slap in the face' to Coventry City

Ally McCoist insists that Coventry City are being sold short by the media onslaught against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.

Pundits queued up to ridicule the Premier League aristocrats for surrendering a 3-0 lead to the Sky Blues in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final and coming within a few millimetres of a stunning defeat when Victor Torp’s strike was disallowed in the dying seconds of extra-time.

Many, including Old Trafford legend Roy Keane, claimed that the Red Devils were “too embarrassed” to celebrate after winning 4-2 in the subsequent penalty shootout. But under-fire boss ten Hag rejected that interpretation and, speaking on Monday morning’s talkSPORT breakfast show with Jeff Stelling, McCoist explained: “I don’t like the word because I think it’s actually disrespectful to Coventry.

“Should Manchester United have beaten Coventry? Yes of course they should, particularly when they were 3-0 up with 19 minutes to go. But to use the word ‘embarrassment’ I just think is a slap in the face to Coventry more than anything, who were absolutely magnificent.

“I understand where Roy’s coming from, but at the same time I napped it beforehand. I covered the quarter-final game against Wolves and Coventry were excellent.

“They’ve got goals in their team – Simms, Haji, boys who could play at that top, top level. They were unlucky last year, beaten on penalties by Luton, so they’re a side who can more than handle themselves.

“It was so close with the disallowed goal and that would have been one of the greatest FA Cup stories ever.”
