Alyson Hannigan “Was Freaking Out” When She Heard the ‘American Pie’ Reference in Taylor Swift’s “So High School”

Celebrities — they’re just like us!

Alyson Hannigan stayed up to listen to Taylor Swift’s newest album, The Tortured Poets Department, when it was released on April 19. She even texted her kids not to bug her so she could play it through without any interruption.

After listening to the first album, she explained to Vulture that she went to sleep and woke up the next morning to find out that Swift had released a second one, The Anthology, which features “So High School.” The track is one of the few on The Tortured Poets Department seemingly about her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce.

The song’s post-chorus references American Pie, one of Hannigan’s first major roles. The lyrics read, “I’m watching American Pie with you on a Saturday night / Your friends are around, so be quiet / I’m trying to stifle my sighs / ‘Cause I feel so high school every time I look at you / But look at you / Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah.”

“I started listening to [the anthology], and when I got to ‘So High School,’ I was like, What?! I thought maybe I was still sort of sleeping and imagining it,” the How I Met Your Mother star told the publication of the lyric that referenced the film. “But when I heard it, I was freaking out. I woke up my entire family who seemed less enthusiastic than I’d like them to be. Then, I called a friend, and she and I had a nice freakout together. I was so happy. Basically, I was on the date with Travis and Taylor.”

Later in the conversation, Hannigan reflected on the video she filmed with her Dancing With the Stars partner, Sasha Farber, jamming to the song. She explained that he posted it on his feed and Swift liked it, and she couldn’t help but think, “Why wasn’t it on my feed?!”

She also noted that it’s not like she ever sat and thought about whether or not Kelce and Swift watched American Pie, but she wasn’t entirely surprised by that they had either.

“I do have to say that in the past 25 years, people ask me, ‘Oh, what do you get recognized for?’ And I always say that it depends where I am,” Hannigan concluded. “If I were at a football game, it would definitely be American Pie. So it’s not that big of a leap to think that Travis had watched it.”
